The Prince George Cougars have relieved Head Coach Mike Vandekamp and Assistant Coach Stew Malgunas of their duties as of this morning.

The news follows a 9-2 thumping at the hands of the Brandon Wheat Kings, and a season record of  5 wins, 8 losses and 2 shoot out losses  of  the 15 games played.  The team has 12 points on the season, the same as Chilliwack, but P.G.  has 4 games in hand.

General Manager Dallas Thompson will be taking over the head coaching position on an interim basis. The hiring of an assistant coach has not been determined at this time.

“We are committed to getting the team turned around and giving the fans a product that they can be proud of. The one thing we can control is our work ethic and if we commit to never getting outworked good things will happen. We all deserve no less,” states Rick Brodsky, president of the Cougars.

Further comments will  come as the day progresses.

Brodsky ain't gonna get it until he fires himself and particularly his son-in-law. This guy will be an utter joke in the coach's shoes. I feel badly for the young players on this team. No wonder many players recoil at the prospect of being drafted by these clowns.
Sad but not surprising.

Why the Cougars like to hire old school coaches and yes men for their coaching staff is beyond me.

Hire some new blood with some new ideas.

Hockey is a changing game and gone are the archaic days where coaches can simply look at players like they are pieces of meat and do whatever the hell they want.

Get some coaches who realize these are kids they're working with and try to motivate them in a different fashion. Motivating them out of fear just does not work.
This blows me away. How many more coaches are we going to have to go through before the clowns in management see the big picture.Let's start with Dallas,he is the biggest clown in the operation..walks into a job because he's family...the guy is a d*ck and most people that have dealt with him know this.Let's watch Dallas "not piss another month down the drain"..i laugh because we have a good team,it's the management that needs to find the drain.
I used to have six seasons tickets. I eventually gave up after years of seeing that the Cougars top scorer was another team's 20 year old cast off and yet another European prospect was suitable for the fifth line.
I think the final straw was the Ford for Reddenbach trade.
I felt the team was over-achieving under Demsey and that most of the Cougars wouldn't even make any of the other teams. I believe that Brodsky is to the Cougars what Ballard was to the Leafs.
The problem is much bigger that the Coaches and Players. There were only 2500 fans at the last game. That is, 2500 tickets sold, probably closer to 1600 actual fans in the seats. This is a very low number this early in the season and chances are it will not get much better. I suspect that the Owners are seriously considering getting out of town. The City loses $350,000.00 per year, so they have to admit at some point that this endeavour is a failure. So whats the solution.

Kiss the Cougers goodbye, and move the Spruce Kings into the Coliseum, with the Spruce Kings and other venues the City would not lose anymore than they are now, and maybe less. Free up the ice at the Coliseum for more public skating, junior hockey, and other ice related functions. You would also have more ice time at the CN Centre. This would give the taxpayers more utilization of the facilities and cost the City less money.

Its time to get our head out of the clouds and be a little more realistic. We cannot go on supporting this team at the expense of taxpayers. This whole idea is a failure.
I subsidize buses AND hockey players? Gadzooks! What a town! Who else do I subsidize in this town? BTW I don't attend hockey games (maybe once in a blue moon) and I sure don't ride buses.
The difference is Harbinger that the money paid to the Bus Driver goes to pay the expenses of the Bus, the balance of the expenses are picked up by the taxpayer. \

In the case of the Cougers, and other Venues 80% of the money collected goes into someones pocket and the balance goes to the City and the taxpayers pay the difference.

There is a huge difference between the two and it is beyond me why people cannot see the difference. We should not be subsidizing Private Business's.
They are still loosing so the firings didn't work...
I guess the new manager isn't any better than what they fired....so
can they fire family???
