Colleges Sign Deal

The three Colleges in the north, the College of New Caledonia, Northwest Community College and Northern Lights College have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to identify key areas of programming in which each institution will take the lead role for the north.

Northern Lights College - Onshore oil and gas industry; Aviation; Alternative Energy
Northwest Community College - Exploration and mining industry; First Nations Education and Arts
College of New Caledonia - Forestry and wood related; Health Sciences and related Technologies

"The labour market needs of the North are growing and changing. In order for colleges to support community and economic development it makes sense that we capitalize on our individual strengths and further develop some appropriate areas of specialization and excellence," said Jean Valgardson, President of Northern Lights College.

Each college will focus on programs of its specific sector. There will also be communication between the three so partners can share in successes, curicula and espertise.

The agreement also means the three colleges will no longer be competing for many of the same students because each college has a different focus.

I for one would like to see the Colleges recruit instructors for all trades so we can get our kids right from Gr. 12 working. Then we have to convince the Gov't to hand over a pile of money for new buildings, equipment so we can teach these young kids trades with the proper tools and equipment that we sooo need. Then we need to convince business to take on lots of apprentices. We are at least 15 years behind. With all the high level staff in our colleges looking at the big picture, I am amazed that they dropped the ball on this one. All levels seem reactive to industry not proactive. We will be in real trouble in 10 or so years. (We are now....but just wait) cheap labor from around the world will egin appearing on our door. (I am not prejudiced, this is just a fact that is going to occur)
