Bug Still Making Rounds at Two P.G. Facilities

Its expected the outbreak of gastrointestinal illness that surfaced at two Prince George assisted living facilities will disappear by the end of the week.
"Staff at the two centres ( Laurier and Alward Place) put a number of initiatives in place including hand washing stations throughout the facilities, requesting that residents eat in their units as opposed to the central dining area, friends and families reduce visiting and the addition of extra cleaning staff" says Northern Health Medical Officer, Dr. Lorna Medd
Medd adds "This is what we used to call the 24 to 36 hour flu, but although the symptoms may be gone after that period, it is still possible to pass along the illness for another 48 hours." That is why staff have been asked to take an extra two days off work if they had come down with the illness.
Initially, it was thought things would be back to normal today, but another three cases surfaced over the weekend.
This is the second outbreak of gastrointestinal illness in the Northern Health Region, as the hospital in Ft. St. John is going through a similar bout with the bug. That hospital hopes to resume regular visiting hours at the end of this week.
