Dr. Bert Kelly, head of the Northern Medical Society says he is not surprised by Health Minister George Abbott’s confirmation this morning that radiation therapy in Prince George will be part of the northern cancer care strategy, but he is disappointed in the time line.

The Minister is saying 5-10 years before the service will be available in Prince George. Kelly says that time frame can be reduced, “I think what he’s giving us is that he’s turned off the red light and given us an amber. Now we’ve got the amber, we’ll have to see 5 to 10 years what we can do with that, I would hope we can get to the green light well inside 5 - 10 years and I think my colleagues will be pushing the agenda.”

Minister Abbott says radiation therapy has never been about the bricks and mortar, rather, it’s been about a full service program that involves prevention programs, screening programs and maintaining and building on the chemotherapy services offered in hospitals throughout the north.  The real key says Abbott, is the expertise “To move forward to a full scale, full service cancer centre in the north, another huge piece is the recruitment and retention of health care professionals“ says the Minister of Health. Abbott says that may be the most challenging part of the entire strategy “They are not easily found, so that is going to be some of the work the B.C. Cancer Agency and Northern Health will be undertaking in the years ahead is to build the base of health human resources, in particular the highly skilled professionals that are needed to operate a full scale, full service cancer centre.”

Sounds like our cancer clinic will be done about the same time as the Cariboo CONnector. In the mean time y'all keep right on voting for Gordo's Group.
Governments move like glaciers. Unless you owe them money.
Some of the best facilities for Cancer Treatment are in Vancouver. Those people west of Prince George ie; Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rupert, feel that if they have to travel for treatment, they would sooner travel to Vancouver than to Prince George, (One reason is that they can fly to Vancouver)

Prince George as usual wants to build a Cancer Clinic here so that people from outlying areas can travel to Prince George, but at the same time they complain because they have to travel to Vancouver. Whats with that. Whats good for the Goose is good for the Gander.

As the Health Minister pointed out, the most challenging part of the strategy will be to get professionals to come and to stay in Prince George. The professionals will of course be in favour of increasing facilities in Vancouver, or maybe Kelowna BC. There last choice would be Prince George.

People in Prince George like to say that they are BC'S Northern Capital, and that they are smack in the middle of the Province and the gateway to everywhere.

People in Vancouver and other areas say Prince George is in the middle of a wilderness, in the middle of the Province, with 6 months of winter, and 500 miles from anywhere. They are not exactly busting down the doors to come here.

Thats why the President of UNBC is in China trying to get students for the University, because he knows that the is not going to increase the numbers from the lower mainland, or from the Southern Interior, so he is trying the International Route.
Radiation treatment for cancer does nothing to prevent cancer or identify the causes of cancer.

I have heard from the professionals who administer this treatment that most of them would not use it on themselves. This isn't very encouraging, considering all of the money that is spent on cancer research.

Maybe we should be spending more money in determining how so many people don't get cancer. There has got to be a reason. Chester
I agree Chester. Maybe this new legislation brought in by the Harper Government will help in determining the cause, or at least get all the information on Cancer under one roof so that it can be shared and utlized.
If we sent more time trying to find the cause rather then the cure perhaps it would be easier to find a cure. Or at least tell us the whatnots.

Cheers
