UNBC Timberwolves defending against Camosun College Chargers
The UNBC Northern Timberwolves women’s basketball team is in lofty company after a 6 and 1 start to the BC Colleges Athletic Association season. A doubleheader sweep of inexperienced Camosun College of Victoria sent the T-wolves into the first-half break with the second best winning percentage in the nine team league.
Loralyn Murdoch, head coach of UNBC, quickly noted the Northern Timberwolves have yet to face the projected powers of the BCCAA. But Murdoch will definitely take six victories in seven games. She credits first-half success to the T-wolves commitment back in August.
“They showed up a week early for training camp,” Loralyn Murdoch said.
“That extra week of training, that extra week of scrimmaging, we are in much better shape for it now.”
Third year guard Jaclyn Nazareno admits she is more comfortable in a leadership role this season all because of another year of experience for both her and her teammates.
“I think the girls now understand what it takes to play in this league,” Jaclyn Nazareno said.
The small hard working Timberwolves stress defense. The reality of a strong second-half may come down to attacking the basket.
“We have to come up with different ways to get the ball inside,” Murdoch said.
It is early, but the 06-07 edition of the UNBC women’s basketball team appear committed to finding ways to improve.
“We want to build on are good start,” Nazareno said.
“Always want more is one of our goals.”
The T-Wolves will return to league play on January 12 when Douglas College step onto the Prince George court. Before then, the UNBC women will travel to the Grant MacEwan College tournament in Edmonton.
