The development of a new building for the RCMP in Prince George is now in the "planning stage".

"Planning takes a long time" says Superintendent Dahl Chambers.  "We have been to Edmonton and looked at a couple of the buildings that they have, we are going back to North Vancouver to look at their building to get some further ideas."

Chambers says they went to Edmonton because of the cold weather climate and the fact that city has two new facilities.  "They have some good ideas for us, but probably won’t fulfill all our needs" says Chmabers.  He says they will head back to Vancouver to solidify ideas.  "Then we will get to the design stage and see what we can come up with."

The construction of a new RCMP building is a top priority on the City’s capital projects plan.  The land has already been purchased.  The new building will be located on the block along Victoria between 4th and 5th where the current Bingo hall and "Big Deals" store are located.

Better get out ther and write more tickets to pay for everything.
I am not sure why one would go to large communities which are divided into precincts of responsibilities rather than smaller communities which might have conditions more closely associated with ours in that it is a single station.

Timmins is a northern community of around 50,000. They have about 80 police officers, with a city area about three or four times the size of PG. They have a northern climate, thus have to deal with those issues with respect to building needs, and they are remote from large urban areas - about 300km to Sudbury and 700km to Toronto

On top of that, they are getting close to finishing their new police services building.

Interestingly, they have their own web site at http://police.timmins.ca which provides quite a bit of information. In fact, it is the type of information that speaks about a service that is quite transparent to its citizens.

On that site, click onto "new police station updates" under "NEWSROOM" on the left. Also click on "photo gallery" for images.

I digress a bit here, but while with Timmins, a community dependent on natural resources, note the highlighted section of the mayor's address of the "state of the City" which can be seen about 2/3rd down the page.

"THE FOREST INDUSTRY AS YOU ARE ALL AWARE HAS BEEN GOING THROUGH SOME VERY DIFFICULT TIMES OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS AND WE AS A MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT HAVE BEEN SUPPORTING LOBBYING SENIOR LEVELS OF GOVERNMENTS TO TAKE A MORE ACTIVE ROLE TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO THE FOREST INDUSTRY."

We are not alone in forestry presenting some problems, and not alone in going to senior governments for assistance.
Its just not confusing enough to do as you suggest, Owl. With a bit of effort we can really screw it up. And dont forget to vote.

Cheers

Vote? That another two years down the road. Two years down the road at this time is a long time. Get 25 to 30 people out there again and we will confuse the public enough to vote the same slate in again. I am sorry, but in my book voting is not an option for change when there are too few in the city interested in more than a 5 second sound byte.
Naw you missed it. You can vote right now on my calender survey. Check Bens "Time for Change" post"
Prince George BC Located in the **North** has been a City for **90 Years** Police Station in 1925 was a log cabin. Years ago police station was where the new Gaming Casino is going to be built, 7th and Quebec. Present location of Police Station 8th and Brunswick, approximately 35 years old. Is this old for a building?? Only in Prince George. The City bought the CN Building on 1st Avenue a few years ago for Initiatives Prince George and this building is approx 35 years old.

So on the one hand we have a 35 year old building that must be replaced, and on the other hand we have a 35 year old building that we buy for the City. As someone mentioned in an earilier post the building on 8th and Brunswick was designed to go up a further 3 stories or so, and therefore we probably could have upgraded this building for the Police for a lot less than the 18 Million we are going to spend on a new one.

Last but not least my point is. If we have been in the Police business in the town for almost 100 years, why do we have to go to other Cities to figure out what we need. Its much like the Mayor attending the World Winter Cities Mayors Conference in China to get a better understanding of Winter conditions and snow removal. (As if we didnt have all the expertise we need on that subject)
Hope they don't ferget the revolving door fer the criminals. Might save heat.
