Federal Minister of Natural Resources,Gary Lunn, visited with staff and students at UNBC this morning.

During his visit, Lunn praised the University for it's research on the mountain pine beetle. "When you look at the maps and see the area the beetle has  infested, it's just mind boggling" said Lunn, who fell short of calling it a natural disaster.

He did address questions about his government's  efforts on environmental issues, saying while the Harper team is not in favour of a "carbon tax" there is a possibility  industry may be asked to  contribute to a "technology fund" if they are unable to  meet emission reduction targets.

He  made it clear he is no scientist but  said  when it comes to  evidence of climate change, one only has to look at what has happened in Stanely Park for  evidence of climate change "There used to be a road with a canopy of trees, and now that canopy is gone, its a disaster."

The Minister is scheduled to speak at the luncheon today at the B.C. Resources Forum underway at the Civic Centre.

The thing I find depressing about the Stanly Park thing is that everyone down there is on board with finding ways to get funding for park rehabilitation and yet up here in the North that hasn't crossed anyones mind for similar types of projects for decades....
What parks? What we have we don't appreciate, we industrializwe!
Lets see how many positions the University drops in the Mclean's ratings after the staff layoff's happen. They are losing Max Blouw as well and he is the one responsible for all the research dollars that have been given to the University lately.

I personally believe Max should have been given the President's job at UNBC, but now he is going to an even better University.
We have about 4 or 5 urban parks. The rest are mainly pieces of land which are left with little effort to develop them as urban parks.

The main location where I miss a park is downtown. Connaught Hill is interesting to look at from downtown but hard to get to with a bag lunch from a downtown office during a summer day.
