Strength in Numbers: One Man's Opinion
By Ben Meisner
As you travel the central interior region, you begin to see the importance of the region as a whole.
It leads to the question as to why isn't there any joint effort involving Prince George, Vanderhoof, Quesnel, Ft St. James, Fraser Lake, Fort Fraser, Mackenzie and other effected communities along the line with a view to putting together a unified stand when it comes to this region?
Instead of all singing from the same song sheet, we from Prince George, who must be viewed as Big Brother from the outlying communities, have not played our part.
There is OBAC, there is the Highway 16 ( Yellowhead) Association, there is the North Central Municipal Association, but has any one of those groups come up with a plan for the north?
We are off to China and other foreign countries, trying to attract trade and commerce from them, while within minutes of our city we fail to seek ways to improve the general lot.
There are a host of projects that could be undertaken to improve all of the area.
The small surrounding communities from this region are major contributors to our economy. Without the towns such as Vanderhoof and Quesnel our economy would suffer in a major way. It is an accepted fact that over 50% of the buying from centers such as Mackenzie takes place in this city. That is significant enough that we should be trying to assist them in their endeavours rather than casting them to the wind.
Not once, can I recall a joint meeting of the local politicians from the local municipalities coming together to develop a plan for the north.
That meeting is long overdue and "big brother" must initiate it.
I’m Meisner and that’s one man's opinion
