Strength in Numbers: One Man's Opinion

As you travel the central interior region, you begin to see the importance of  the region as a whole.

It leads to the question as to why isn't there any joint effort involving Prince George, Vanderhoof, Quesnel, Ft St. James, Fraser Lake, Fort Fraser, Mackenzie and other effected communities along the line with a view to putting together a unified stand when it comes to this region?

Instead of all singing from the same song sheet, we from Prince George, who must be viewed as Big Brother from the outlying communities, have not played our part.

There is OBAC, there is the Highway 16 ( Yellowhead) Association,  there is the North Central Municipal Association, but  has any one of those groups come up with a plan for the north?

We are off to China and other foreign countries, trying to attract trade and commerce from them, while within minutes of our city we fail to seek ways to improve the general lot.

There are a host of projects that could be undertaken to improve all of the area.

The small surrounding communities from this region are major contributors to our economy.  Without the towns such as Vanderhoof and Quesnel our economy would suffer in a major way. It is an accepted fact that over 50% of the buying from centers such as Mackenzie takes place in this city. That is significant enough that we should be trying to assist them in their endeavours rather than casting them to the wind.

Not once, can I recall a joint meeting of the local politicians from the  local municipalities coming  together  to develop a plan for the north.

That meeting is long overdue and "big brother" must initiate it.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man's opinion

Ben its been the elephant in the room for years now. The obvious starting place would be transportation and tourism. Currently both files have no leadership in these parts.
What ??? Work together ???

Is that a swear word Ben....Kinsley is a one man show , and can do it all alone.
That is why he keeps flying to exotic locations all over the world....to devise his MASTER PLAN !

Darn even for me, I think I spiked my own sarcasm meter today........
Amen marty...lol
Prince George is much like a self centered individual. We are always looking at whats good for us, but we are incapable of looking at what is good for the area as a whole.

We are constantly trying to get venues to Prince George so that we can make money off of them, but do little for the surrounding areas.

A case in point would be the Cancer Clinic. Once we established that we wanted a Cancer Clinic in Prince George we then went out to the surrouding areas and solicited their support. We in Prince George who felt that it was beneath us to fly to Vancouver for Cancer Treatment had no problem in asking the residents of Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rupert, and points in between to travel by car or bus to Prince George to a cancer clinic. From what I heard we were told in no uncertain terms that from their point of view they were far better off flying to Vancouver from Prince Rupert, and using the Vancouver facilities. Up until we wanted their support we could have cared less how they got their treatment.

Case in point. We presently have a huge issue with the City of Kitimat and Alcan, wherein the City stands to lose approx 900 jobs. The City has been fighting Alcan and the Provincial Government for years on this issue, and I suspect that we havent once made an effort to understand the problem, or to offer any support.

Case in point. Once Prince Rupert was selected as a Container Port, all of a sudden Prince George took an interest and even sent a delegation to Prince Rupert to see what kind of spin off benefits we could get from their good fortune, however when the Pulp Mill shut down in Prince Rupert, and the sawmills closed in Terrace and New Hazelton, and these Citys were left holding the bag for Millions in taxes owed to them, you didnt hear a peep out of Prince George.

Prince George business wants all the people from the surrounding areas to come to Prince George and spend their money, however if you travel around this country you will find few people from Prince George going to outlying areas to spend money. Fishermen and Hunters would be an exception, however local tourists spending greebacks are few and far between.

Smithers BC would be

an ideal location for a Cancer Clinic. It is central to all the Citys in North Central BC is located in a beautiful valley, with great scenery, has clean air, and is nice and quiet. If we could get Prince Rupert, Terrace, Kitimat, Houston, Smithers, Burns Lake, Vanderhoof, Prince George, Quesnel, and Mackenzie to support a Cancer Clinic in this area. (Away from the STINK and pollution) of Prince George we might have a chance of getting one. Do you think that Prince George would be **Big Brother** enough to support such a project in an area other than Prince George???

I agree with Ben that we should get some meetings going with these other areas, and see what interests we have in common, however at the end of the day it cant just be to make more money for **good old PG** these other areas have to have some say because **big brother** needs to be toned down.

"...(Kitimat)has been fighting Alcan and the Provincial Government for years on this issue, and I suspect that we havent once made an effort to understand the problem, or to offer any support."

Great stuff, Pal! I question whether the mayor has EVER travelled to Kitimat to sit down with the people there and ask how Prince George can assist that two-company town in its perfectly legal fight!

It would have been a more worthwhile effort but much less glamorous and attention getting, perhaps too inexpensive?
