Fire crews from four halls were called out to the 35-hundred block of McLarty Crescent, off North Nechako Road, this morning to deal with a chimney fire.

Captain Cam Larson says the homeowner had a blaze burning in the fireplace, but noticed smoke spewing from the eaves on the home's exterior and called the fire department.

Larson says the fire appears to have spread from the chimney into a wall and the attic was filled with smoke.  He says crews were able to extinguish the flames before they spread into the home.

No damage estimate is available at this point.

A reminder that during an Air Quality Advisory the City's Clean Air Bylaw prohibits the use of wood burning appliances, except for Sole Wood Burning Heat Users.  Open burning, including backyard burning and land clearing burning is also banned.

A couple of important things required for people to act on such regulations. The most important is to know that an advisory is in effect.

I suspect that if one were to take a survey during an advisory that only a very low percentage of people would know that an advisory is in effect.

I think we need to start a city program to install alarm systems in each house with a wood burning appliance which would sound when there was an advisory in effect.

Of course, the cost of that would be a user pay program and thus funded by those who have such appliances in their houses.
