It has been an anxious weekend of waiting for staff and faculty at the University of Northern B.C., as the Board of Governors gathered in Vancouver to make some tough decisions.

Positions and program cuts were up for discussion, as the university grapples with a budget shortfall of $2-million dollars -- a deficit that is predicted to hit $15-million by 2010, if changes aren’t made at UNBC.

Director of Media and Public Relations, Rob van Adrichem, says he expected a philosophical debate to be part and parcel of those tough financial decisions at the weekend gathering.

Van Adrichem says UNBC is shifting from a university of growth, to one that is sustainable and that may mean strengthening programs where interest is high and tailoring back ones that aren’t attracting students.

A news conference to discuss the Board’s decisions will be held later this morning.
