The provincial government has announced more than $40-thousand dollars in funding for two area programs designed to attract and retain Aboriginal nurses.
Carrier Sekani Family Services in Vanderhoof is set to receive just over $26-thousand dollars to operate a "Buddy Program", while almost $15-thousand dollars will go to the College of New Caledonia to host Aboriginal Nursing Career Fairs.
Prince George-Omenica MLA, John Rustad, says "The Buddy Program is an innovative ideat that will match new nurses with more experienced caregivers to help ease the transition into that role." He says it will also provide newly hired nurses with a historical background to Aboriginal health issues.
"CNC's project will encourage youth at a young age to recognize the importance of math and science, as well as develop a workshop about nursing that will be targeted at Grade seven students," says Prince George-Mount Robson MLA, and Advanced Education Minister, Shirley Bond.
CNC will invite 40 interested youth to participate in "Explore Nursing Days", which will also include an interactive tour of the nursing labs.
As part of its Aboriginal Nursing Strategies, the Ministry of Health put out a request for proposals in 2006/07 for a maximum of $35-thousand dollars. A total of $250-thousand dollars was made available to post-secondary institutions, Aboriginal groups and nursing associations.
