The Puck Drops on CIS Women's Hockey in Prince George
By Kelly Sharp
Female hockey is showcased in Prince George this weekend. The CIS Canada West regular season wraps up for the defending national champion University of Alberta Pandas and UBC Thunderbirds on Coliseum ice. The powerhouse Pandas head into weekend doubleheader against the T-Birds ranked third nationally in CIS women’s hockey, cruising to a 19-3 first place conference record. The 8-13-1 UBC ice hockey women’s team is clinging to the fourth and final playoff spot in Canada West. The Thunderbirds are 2 points ahead of Saskatchewan, but the tiebreaker would go to Saskatchewan if the two teams share fourth place after this weekend. Saskatchewan visits second-place Regina for a pair of games.
Add to the UBC challenge, the Pandas are 4-0 against the T-birds this season, outscoring the lower mainland team 29-4. U of A statistical credentials include scoring the most goals and allowing the fewest goals in Canada West. The top 4-point getters in the conference are from the Edmonton based university.
The first –ever CIS women’s hockey games in Prince George are at 7:30 Friday and Saturday night at the Coliseum.
The BC Hockey Jamboree for 7-13 year-old females of all skills levels will take over the Kin Centre ice Saturday and Sunday.
