Agriculture Minister Pat Bell says the announcement from the throne speech yesterday that air quality standards will become much more stringent in the coming years, should be welcome news to the people of Prince George.

Bell says “Air quality over the past couple of months has not been good in this city and we are about to make significant changes in our legislation to fix this problem. The Pulp Mills, refineries and other large industries will have to meet much higher standards by the year 2020, in most cases much sooner than that.”

Prince George has suffered through a large number of air quality days this winter and the matter of air quality has become a major concern for residents says Bell.

2020!
Pulp Mills and other industries have been meeting higher standards over time. The emission standards today are higher than they were when they were first built.

The plain and simple fact is, they are in the wrong location for health purposes. I see noting in the reports so far that indicates that the emission standards are based on health factors. They are based on greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gas emission criteria do not take location into consideration. There will be some further reduction of emissions from a healt point of view, but that is not the primary purpose of them being legislated to further reduction.

I notice that the proposal is to remove all beehive burners. They were supposed to all be gone by now as I recall the original schedule of over a decade ago. They were to be shut down for health reasons.

It is interesting to see that now they are proposed to be shut down for the health of the planet. The health of people is secondary.

Anyway, I suppose every little bit helps ... eventually
Olympics first ..... then environment ... eventually health ....

I notice that neither Canada nor the USA are signing on to outlaw mercury emissions and effluent.

I just did a quick calculation ..... most of us will be 13 years older by then ....

But I understand that those to the south age about half as quickly as we do .... something to do with a mill rate I think

;-)
By 2020 there will not be any pulp mills in Prince George.
Who's to worry-clean air may not make much of a difference to many of us-but be nice for the ones we leave.
Wow, I'm tired-feeling old too.
Wonder if it shows?

Come off of it Pat, it's been bad for much longer than a couple of months. More like a couple of decades. Good try at a spin though. Did Gordo write that line for you?
If CN Rail doesnt get back to work soon the Pulp Mills will have to shut down because they cannot get rid of their pulp. If that happens you might get a couple of weeks repreive from the pollution.

Owls right the Bee Hive burners were supposed to have been gone years ago, however if they had been then we would not have any way of getting rid of the wood waste from the sawmills, especially when they were running 3 shifts so that they could flood the US Market and get a huge rebate. The Pulp Mills cannot burn all the hog fuel, and therefore it goes into the Bee Hive burners. We still have them at Bear Lake, Clear Lake, Isle Pierre, Dunkely, and who knows where else.

If they shut them down they better have a way of getting rid of the woodwaste.
There are three of them (Bee Hive Burners)still burning between Vanderhoof and Houston as of last weekend. Seems to me that the wind often blows from the ocean, west coast inland towards our fair community. But, I'm not skilled in the study of air polution, what would I know? Chester
