Airport Still Waiting for Province to "Show Me the Money"

Yesterday's throne speech made mention of  the Province being committed to the ports and airports of B.C, but the Prince George Airport Authority is still waiting for the Provincial Government to deliver its one third share of the cost of  the runway expansion plans, that means $11 million dollars.

Agriculture Minister Pat Bell says nothing has changed when it comes to the efforts by Shirley Bond, John Rustad and himself with respect to the expansion of the Prince George Airport runway. "We view this as an important project in this region and Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon is now putting the finishing touches to his budget with respect to the item."

Bell says he and his colleagues are pushing for the dollars "All three of us from this region view the runway as a most important project and raise the issue in Cabinet whenever possible. There is no reason to believe that we won’t be contributing $11 million towards the project . But keep in mind our job in Victoria is a to ensure that the money we have in the province is well spent. It is in the end one of our top priorities. "

The  Prince George Airport Authority is using the winter months to  complete  the runway design so the construction can begin  at the first spring thaw opportunity.  The Authority wants to have the first phase of the  expansion compete in time for the opening of the Prince Rupert Port.

Pat you are absolutely honestf or once in your political career... I appaud you!
"NOTHING HAS CHANGED".....
nothing is being done either except a lot of hot air as usual
A promise by the Liberals? File it away with the rest of the broken ones.
At least it is a separate file from the feel good lies from the NDP! HeeHee!

Hey, did you see that clip of Jimmy Patterson at the Native Economic Development conference in Vancouver? Jimmy made Glen Clarke stand beside him while Jimmy talked about how important honesty and ethics are in business. Jim has bought his own punching bag! HeeHee!

The problem and the solutions are right in the article itself.3 names,3 spin doctors.Pat Bell,Shirly Bond, and John Rustad. What more is there to say? Want to fix the problem? Stop buying their crap and get rid of them once and for all.And then let's start paying attention to what our elected representatives actually do...which is very little except blah, blah, blah.
I didn't vote for them...nor will I...
they talk the talk but when you ask them a question they either don't answer it, or scurry away in to a corner somewhere where they don't answer ...
Why would you be in a hurry to put 33 Million dollars into an Airport Expansion that is well on its way to nowhereville.

This expansion was an ill conceived plan from the get go., and I fail so see at this time any connection whatsoever between the completion of the Runway and the shipping of Containers out of Prince Rupert.

When you accuse the 3 Liberals of being full of BS (I dont dispute that observation) you should include those people from the Airport Authority who would have you beleive that they are going to get all kinds of business because of this expansion.

I'll beleive it when I see it.
Lots of negative feedback. Where's the positive feedback?
Read Pat Bell's statement in the article, particularly the last part.I honestly believe that it is going to get a lot tougher to get Victoria to pay for anything other than Olympic related projects on the lower mainland from here on out to 2010.There is a very real danger of the games going grossly over budget and Campbell and his lackies know that. They just aren't saying it yet.More spin and hoard the cash!We will continue to see Campbell pump the games and try to get the rest of the province on board to keep the heat off,but don't go looking for large amounts of money.IMO,the benefits and large expenditures will be on the lower mainland. And the average joe will not even be able to park his car on the lower mainland or stay in a hotel anywhere near the games, never mind go and actually watch something at Whistler. But then, you and I are not the target market and we all should understand that.So 11 million bucks for the airport may be hard to find over the next three years unless they get nervous around election time. And that I believe,is what they are holding back for and not just on the airport.
I might be dead in 13 years. But then again, if the next twenty years goes as fast as the last twenty years, I don't see a problem. The kid has a job. Taxes can be his problem after I am gone. The circle of life. a.k.a. The Lion King. Have a nice day and a nicer tomorrow.
Great news for those that want to work and have businesses that thrive on distribution and all spin offs. The Airport expansion is one of the key developments to a great future in PG and area.
The good news!
'If' we get the money for the runway expansion it will be wonderful...
not holding my breath though...
I heard that we will not be able to attend the Olympic games anyways even if we wanted to. Rummer is that all the major sponsors of th games get first chance at the venue tickets, followed by the international media, and any left overs would be available to the general public on first come first serve. They say you are more likely to win the lottery then get tickets for anything Canada, or any of the hockey games.

The promise for airport money is a joke on us IMO. Just like the rest of their wish list they just published. I guess retoric is a move in the right direction, but I just don't believe anything this government tells us.

Time Will Tell
I agree Chadermando...I heard John Furlong say the other night that there will only be 70 percent of the tickets available to the general public and that will be for a very short time.He was doing a little pumping and looking very uncomfortable...By the time they go on sale, my guess is that most of them will be snapped up by the big guns and sponsors. And I also figure the events featuring canadians will be both too expensive and almost impossible to get.Guess they forgot to mention that part.(sorry,I am way off topic)
"Lots of negative feedback. Where's the positive feedback?"

Here it is:

"We view this as an important project in this region and Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon is now putting the finishing touches to his budget with respect to the item."

Conclusion:

Clear as a bell! The money will be included in the budget and delivered on time.
Yah!
Get a life Yama. Seems you have a one track mind. Figure to see the Olympic overrun to be bigger than the fast ferry fiasco.

Hee Hee
The Liberals will come up with the 11 Million, and I suggest to you they will give it closer to the next election so that they can get some mileage out of it. Photo Ops, Glad Handing, etc;

The Airport Authority already has the loan of 11 Million from the Northern Trust, and the 11 Million from the Federal Government so they have lots of money to get this project rolling. With a little nudge, nudge, wink, wink, from the Provincial Government I suggest that they will go ahead with the project as soon as possible.

At the end of the day it will make little or no difference when they get the money, or when the extension is completed, because at this point in time they have no business, and no Airlines waiting to use these facilities, and it is within the realm of possibility that they never will. So whats the hurry. This whole project is nothing more than various levels of Government giving each other tax dollars and pretending that they are doing someting productive, when in fact they are doing nothing.

Despite all the information to the contrary some people in Prince George still beleive that the Prince Rupert Container Port will have an impact on Prince George, and they still think that a 400 ft extension to a Regional Airport in the middle of **nowhere** will have a major impact on the Region. Even with the Airport Authority stating quite clearly that the project is based over 20 years and will require getting some 10% of the business from Anchorage Alaska (which is highly unlikely) they still think it will have some kind of immediate impact. Even if it came to fruition over 20 years you would probably be looking at 300 jobs at the most.

Please wake up a smell the roses. Try to keep statements from Politicians, Developers, Real Estate Salesmen, and vested interest groups, separate from reality.

Wheres the **Beef**
Well said Palopu!I couldn't agree more.I worked for a major shipping company for quite few years who actually stopped sending ships to Rupert when I lived there.(and I moved in disgust)
A lack of cargo was part of it but they also did not buy the government spin or this entire Northwest Corridor hoopla. In fact, one of our key executives resigned from the board because of the retoric and lack of action. On and on it went with no results.
From what I am hearing from friends in the company since retiring, they still are not all that excited. They are taking the safer wait and see route.
If it is the government telling you something, better to swallow a few grains of salt along with the crap.It makes it easier to get the disappointment down later.I have learned not to get too damn excited until it actually happens if it comes from a politician. My guess would be not until just before election time.Too much dough going out for other things right now, and every bean is being watched and counted.IMO.

Promised monies

We sure have lots on our plate don't we

Stop that almighty crying until it is a positive the Liberals won't come up with the money.
I firmly believe they will-whether that runway will be a benefit or not.
Let's hope it will be.
The city gets away with all their crap and with a few half hearted complaints uttered by the residents, and then the big mournful cry surfaces over a maybe 11 million for the airport runway.
The cops get away with the good old pick up the bad guy and let him go home with a promise he will show up like a good boy on court day. They cannot even begin to clean up the hood, but now the savior will come on the scene in the form of Craig-with countless new solutions I am sure.
The bridge might as well fall into the Nechako. It was a horrible deal in the beginning, but the city rocket scientists thought they were pulling a fast one buying a bridge for a buck. Who got sucked in?
A million dollar clock that no one will be capable of operating. Have to hire somebody new and pay them the big bucks to keep telling the guys at city hall the time.
The hewn cry over the potholes finally moved the ones with the brain power at city hall into action-with a great plan on how to make scapegoats out of the residents and keep the road maintenance money for other use. Just too easy making everybody roll over and play dead.
They fed the residents enough garbage until they got their new bins and trucks. Now comes the time to really start paying for your garbage pick up-and they will show us what a great saving is the result of this master minded plan.
The learned Mayor had a stall out in his brain and always had the population at 80,000 in Prince George. We are thousands off that, and in years to come we may drop some more. I say, let him take his holidays and stay clear of city hall for awhile. It might actually save the city residents money in the long haul.
It acually will make no difference how much money comes into the city coffers. It will be spent, every last dime, and loans made to go along with it. This city is not run like a business. It is run to suit the Mayor and Council, and the tax payers are just a bothersome lot to ignore, and hope they will go away.
Forget that damn runway, and pay attention to the pickpockets you are dealing with on the end of George St.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Complete with potholes.
Well Said!
