BC’s in Calgary tonight for their second meeting of this campaign against the 3 and 3 Stampeders.... the Lions top the CFL at 6 and 0. The Stamps are showing signs of gaining momentum, and the Lions look to silence the barking dog.
Most down to earth BC died in the wools would likely not have felt comfortable going out on a limb projecting an automatic two points for their heros against the Eskimos last week, but on the other hand many would have been surprised had they not shown up mentally prepared.
The record not-with-standing, the opposite can said for this contest in light of last week’s outcome.
Actually a letdown against a 50/50 opponent who they’ve already beaten is a possibility, as teams tend in “these circumstances” to exhale and relax.
If they show up with all guns blazing they’ll leave with another two points.
In Calgary they’re thinking...is this the part where I’m supposed to be intimidated?
This is not a collection of hapless trailer park boys. After all they’re coming off a strong showing against the Blue Bombers last week beating the ‘Peg 30-21 before a jammed packed McMahon Stadium crowd of 30,000 plus fans, where the Faulty Towers gang from Manitoba fumbled and bungled their way to their 6th loss in 7 games. The sharks from Calgary could smell the blood in the water for most of the night.
It was on the last play of the game the Bombers would make it look respectable with a major to end the contest.
Quarterback Henry Burris had another strong outing with his 3rd straight 300 plus yards game.
Receiver Jermaine Copeland is now third in the league with 31 catches for 556 yards
Meanwhile on the home front, the Leos in spite of another less than perfect showing on Friday Night Football, successfully, unceremoniously dumped on their CFL 2nd. place guests, the Edmonton Eskimos by a score of 25-19 on the sore throwing arm of Casey Printers coming in for a hurting Dave Dickenson.
Printers wasn’t happy with his first start of the season and didn’t look comfortable in the pivot position. “I have to get better”, said Printers. “I missed a lot of throws, a lot of deep balls,...that’s from my shoulder not being exactly what I want it to be. It’s still kind of 90 per cent”.
It’s this writers opinion after watching Casey at the bat, he needs more healing time and based on the performances of both QB’s, Dickenson will be behind the center if he is at all able to play.
Who’s bad:
Canadian defensive end Brent Johnson must look to opposing quarterbacks as though he’s gone postal, while night after night he blows by their pass protection storming in for the kill. As his reward he now rules the roost atop the CFL in quarterback sack totals with six.
Performances of this magnitude are long overdue for a BC Lions defensive player.
Down and out:
On a disappointing note, wide receiver Tony Simmons will be gone for the balance of season with a torn ACL injured in the Edmonton game. He will undergo re-constructive surgery.
This is a blow to the team and he will be sorely missed as he was shaping up nicely as yet another reliable go to guy in the Lion’s offensive arsenal.
