Prince Rupert RCMP Attacked By Man With Knife

It began as a seemingly minor call over an unpaid cab fare...
In the end, it took three RCMP officers to subdue a 30-year-old Prince Rupert man who had armed himself with a knife, after allegedly refusing to pay his tab.
Prince Rupert RCMP Media Relations Officer, Constable Steve Richards, says the first officer on the scene arrested the man outside his residence, but, after a brief struggle the suspect fled inside his home.
Richards says two additional police officers arrived and, after announcing themselves, the three members entered the house where they were attacked by the same man, who was now armed with a knife. The officers were able to subdue the man without anyone being seriously injured. Several charges are pending against the male, but he has been released from custody on a promise to appear in court in March.
Constable Richards says this case "illustrates how a seemingly minor call for service can turn dangerous for police. A man prepared to attack police with a knife, over a few dollars for cab fare, helps to remind us, as Police Officers, why we must always be alert."
Richards says, "Members of the public are often surprised and ask why we sometimes have two or three members respond to calls. Incidents like this one demonstrate why, whenever possible, we will respond to calls with more than one member."
