Cancer Clinic: Still Working It Through

Prince George-North MLA Pat Bell says a Northern Cancer Clinic is not a matter of if, it's a question of when...

Bell was questioned at the Prince George Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Friday about upcoming capital projects for the city in the year ahead.  And he held up the cancer clinic as one that is no longer under wraps.

In an interview after the meeting, Bell says "We’ve been very clear, as has (Health) minister (George) abbott all along, that the cancer clinic is not a question of if, it’s a question of when you build it and what the requirements are in terms of staffing that cancer clinic and making sure you have the appropriate number of people."

"A cancer clinic is simply a concrete bunker with radioactive material in it until you have the staff to operate it, so we’ve got to make sure that we have the right number of people," says the local MLA.

"We’re working through those processes - how long it will take to train those people - are all pieces of the equation, but certainly I think everyone has been clear that the cancer clinic is not if, it’s when."

Another capital project confirmed is the twinning of the Simon Fraser bridge, with the design contract handed out earlier this month.  And Bell says the provincial government is committed to the airport runway expansion, it's just a matter of working through the numbers.

Here is some of that waste heat (hot air) I was talking about. Can't we get all of these politicos in one room at the same time, collect the by product of their blah-blah and use it to heat a building? say city hall, now that would be the ultimate in re-cycling. Just like they are doing at those dairy farms down there in Bush's land. They collect the byproducts and turn them into something useful, thereby cutting the b*&&$#!t.
metalman.
The numbers???

There is one runway expansion on one end and another expansion on the other end. So, perhaps the discussion then centres around whether that is two expansions to one runway, or an expansion of one runway.

;-)

As far as training staff goes. I understand we are talking about oncologists. Perhaps the other staff also have to be trained.

So, are we relying on training them in BC, Canada, North America or the world? If we work the same with respect to this as we have with everthing else so far, we may stand a better chance to recruit rather than train. Difficult to recruit when there is no facility. Sort of like the airport, difficult to get customers if there are no facilities.. or like industry .. difficult to get them here when there are no facilities.

We have an investment problem. Not that that is unique with Canada. We do not invest. We wait till it falls in our lap and then pay for a virtual sure bet.

Sort of like the tar sands. It was just a matter of time. Then the time came and there was too little there, and everything skyrocketted. Now they jsut announced another $200 million to go into infrastructure development.

Typical Canadian hom hum approach. Anyone who goes outside of that standard practice is looked upon as being careless with their money. There will be failures, but there will also be successes. That is the nature of investment.
Not if, but when, says Pat Bald.

How much money would you bet that the announcement comes shortly before the 2009 election? And then the actual shovels in the ground is delayed until after the Olympics are over. And then delayed again.

And then if it actually gets built, patients from PRupert and FSJ and DC start complaining that they're being diverted from Vancouver, which is probably more accessible than Prince George. So we have a cancer clinic in Prince George that is under-utilized, but built because the Liberals are worried about pissing off the voters. And then you'll have an incredibly difficult time attracting specialists to practice at a clinic that is only half-utilized.

But as long as Pat and Shirley and John get re-elected, right?

Yah, I can't think of one thing that politicians have promised to build here in Prince George that actually got built! HeeHee!
