It will be at least another ten hours before  traffic patterns are back to normal on Highway 97  south,  near the Woodpecker  rest stop.

That is the spot where a tanker truck and small car collided this morning. One person in the car was killed, a second was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.  Their identities have not yet been  released.

The tanker  was carrying  sodium hydroxide, and while there was no leak of the caustic soda, Ministry of the Environment  officials are on the scene to ensure there is no  risk to the environment.   The tanker is on its roof, and a pumper truck is heading to the scene to clear all the  sodium hydroxide from the tanker. The truck will be examined to see if there were any mechanical problems with the tanker truck.

The highway had been closed  from ten this morning till about 2 this afternoon, and is  now open to single lane alternating traffic.

Road conditions were treacherous at the time of the head on collision.
