Tax Hike Not Necessary: One Man's Opinion

By Ben Meisner

Friday, March 02, 2007 03:45 AM

Now we weren’t told Wednesday night the “average price “ increase on your municipal taxes will be about $89 dollars a year , that of course based on your home being worth $133,000 dollars. You were not also told that if the Regional District wants an extra slice, just how much that will be, nor were you told about school taxes. Nor were you told that come June your utility bill will rise, the equivalent of just over another ½ of one per cent in the taxes.

So where does that leave the home owner who is facing a municipal tax increase just shy of 8% , of course right there in line with what you will be getting by way of a raise , or for that matter an increase in your pension benefits in 2007-08.

We are told at the outset that our voices would be heard, that they would be taken under consideration before any decision was made. But true to tradition they were not.

The question remains, why can’t this city find 2 million dollars a year in savings from the city’s total budget of over 100 million so that taxes do not need to rise? Both the federal and provincial governments have been cutting taxes, but not here.

The whole road levy smacked of the famous Terasen Gas deal; it doesn’t matter if the people vote against the idea, just keep bringing it back up until you get the answer that you want.

It’s called democracy?

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

Anyone interested in a taxpayers association at this time or will you waite till your in the poor house? The timing couldnt be better. That is for both scenarios. Choose now.

I would go door to door for membership. Any takers?

Cheers

I think it would be a great idea. You notice that the Mayor was not to impressed with PACHA, and is now trying to get them watered down, by getting the Mayors committee on clean air up and running. The last thing he wants is to have some intelligent people with some backing coming to meetings and asking thought provoking questions.

As it stands right now the Mayor and a couple of Councillors basically run the City, and do whatever they wish.

I am interested in the Taxpayers Assoc., as long as it remains focused on specifics, and doesnt get sidetracked, and is not infiltrated by any Political group.

I would be prepared to do my share in getting people signed up etc;
"It’s called democracy?"

In this case it's called zurowscracy, methinks.
A taxpayers association for me is group that would monitor the acivities at City hall. And as you say Pal let the Mare know its the taxpayer he has to dance to and not his own wish list. And there can be no partisan politics involved.

Keep tuned
More criticism of little Napoleon Kinsleyparte, I see. They should give you an award, Ben.

This line is especially prescient: "Both the federal and provincial governments have been cutting taxes, but not here."

Well, duh. Why do you suppose municipalities across Canada have been unable to cut taxes? Because federal and provincial governments have been offloading responsibilities to local governments. Local governments are then left with two choices: cut services or raise taxes. (Or cut services a little, and take trips to China.)

But Ben won't criticize his pals Pat, Shirley, or John, or his federal pals absentee Dick and bombastic Jay. It's much better to take potshots at a lame duck mayor who is going off to retirement in a year or so.

You really ought to try holding to account the people who actually have the power.

However, I can't wait to see the next Shirley Bond/John Rustad/Pat Bell photo op, and to read the next "non-partisan" Jay Hill unabridged column.
Speaking of the "terasen gas deal". Does anyone know if this deal is bearing as much fruit for the citizens of Prince George as was touted in the debate just before the referendum which sealed this deal.

I recall a city council meeting when this deal was first proposed where a consultant of some sort indicated to our mayor and city council ( at a council meeting) that the only risk to this deal was if this country experienced an inverted yield curve.

Well lately we have been experiencing an inverted yield curve. (Today the Canadian government 10 year bond has a interest rate of 4.0 %, and the Bank of Canada overnight interest rate is 4.25%)

Good question Charles. I dont have the answer but I do know that Terasen has been sold by Kinder Morgan to a Canadian Co., back East. Hopefully someone is minding the store.

Hepcat. We always here the whining about the Feds, and Provincial Governments downloading costs to the Municipalitys but we seldom if ever get any specifics. One that comes to mind is Policing, but other than that I cant think of any, can you??.

In addition, if we can spend $21.5 Million on a new police station, 1 Million for a replay board, maybe $20 Million for a Performing Arts Centre, have two fully functional ice arena's along with Kin one, two, and three. Two fully functional swimming pools (under utilized) an $11 Million Art Centre, utilized by school children. A hugely expensive Civic Centre that is totally underutilized, etc; etc; etc; we should hardly be concerned about money. If we can afford the frivolous then surely we can afford the needs.

The problem with this City is that we pay for the services through taxes, and we dont get them, but we get all the frivolous crap, and then we blame the Provincial, or Federal Government. This City spends something in the area of $100 Million per year and continues to go into debt. How is that possible???

OK. Here is the oppertunity to put your pencil where your mouth is.

We dont have to go door to door to canvas for members to form a rate payers association. I have a partial voters list that can be used to solisit members by phone.

Again there appears to be little interest on this website. I have never done this before but there is a point that action is needed and this is the time.

I will place an add in the Prince George Free Press under Cummunity Announcements for this coming week proposing the formation of a taxpayers association. Please give me your support.

Cheers
I won't claim to be an expert on the city's budget, but suffice it to say that no city's complete budget comes from local taxation. A healthy proportion comes from the provincial government in the form of transfers.

This doesn't include major infrastructure projects, which also used to receive more funding from senior levels of government.

I'm not arguing that the City doesn't deserve close scrutiny and its fair share of criticism. The Mayors travel budget is an embarrassment to anyone who lives in PG.

Ditto, by the way, for the school board and the regionald district. But in those cases, too, the provincial government has given them greater responsibility without more money to meet the needs. Surely the government would come up with money to pay for the removal of all the dead trees. It's a huge cost to a school board, but a drop in the bucket to a government with a multi-billion dollar surplus.

My point is simply this: local politicians are small fries of the world. They're easy catches. The big fish are the provincial and (even bigger) federal governments. It would be nice to have some healthy scrutiny of their actions, instead of always giving them a free pass. I thought this site would be better than the Citizen, who can't give enough love to the provincial Libs and the federal Cons. It's just too bad.
Sorry folks my councilor has advised me not to take an add in the Prince George Free Press and that there is another option that I can use that will also allow you to participate in a taxpayers association that will be much more positive

Cheers
Your Councilor??? In any event keep us posted.
