Prince George City Council has  approved allowing beer sales at 6 Spruce Kings play off games at  the Coliseum.  This will be the first time the  suds have been approved for sale during the Spruce Kings games at that site.  The team says a recent game at the CN Centre (where beer is sold)  showed there was no  problem.

During the playoffs the beer will be sold in the multi-purpose room. That room  has an occupancy  capacity of just under a hundred.

The Mayor, Colin Kinsley, says  the Spruce Kings should be given a chance,.  He said yes, the Spruce Kings market themselves as "family entertainment," you can  go to many family restaurants in town and  get a beer so he doesn’t think  there should be any problem.

The special license will allow the sale of  beer only.  Access to and consumption of the beer is limited to the multi purpose room.

The Spruce Kings have not yet indicated which 6 games they  plan to offer beer sales.

wonderul, now extra entertainment for their $....
it is sad that people can't go out and do something for a couple of hours without having to drink.
No I have no problem with people having a drink in the appropriate places and amounts.
I GUESS THE WHITE SPOT ,DENNYS,THE INN OF THE NORTH, CARIBOO, CHINA SAIL, ARE ALL APPROPRIATE PLACES. BY THE WAY ,WHAT IS AN APPROPRIATE PLACE GOFASTER ???
I will not be taking my son to any of these games. What a shame. Too bad they didn't vote to keep the bars open longer like they did in Vancouver. Look how well that worked. If your going to let the rednecks drink might just as well do it right.
They created bar, pubs and your home for that purpose....
I am not sure that at a public event is appropriate or nessesary...
there are many who will disagree with me....
that is fine....
Dumb move!Booze is a big issue in PG already, and this sort of fits right in.I'm betting it will prove to be a big mistake and very hard to control. How many impaired drivers will be leaving the Coliseum after the big game? But what the hell,it's all about money right?
I have no issue with this.

People have to be responsible for their own actions. Legislating the stupidity out of people is impossible.

If people want a few watered down, over-priced beers at a game then fly at it.
Yes, Andyfreeze, but then we are all aware the end result is always about money with the decisions made at city hall.
The sale of that beer will justify 4 new R C M P officers on our tax bill. Have to give them a starting point.
We are paying for 755 employees, including all the rocket scientists at city hall, but we are not informed as to regular audits being performed to judge the performance of all the departments involved in taking our tax dollars and disposing of them in a highly intelligent manner.
I know this is a "pie in the sky" request, and will not be taken seriously-as the bush bunnies are very forgiving of any or all infractions of what they consider justified expenses.
When you pay a couple hundred dollars more on your taxes this year, for a not too elaborate home I might add, them look to city hall for the reason, and do not forget when the next election rolls around.
I know that is too much to ask, as the heads of the voters will be back in the sand, and they are so accustomed to abuse they would feel a sense of being neglected were it to be withdrawn.
There are a few, (damned few I might add), who feel open rebellion when this Mayor and council take the liberty of spending our tax dollars at the heighth of outright stupidity. Too bad!
With a population of 77,000, the few who would scream like banshees lost in the bush are just that-cries in the wilderness.
They may experience a sense of release of their frustrations by posting on this site, but it ends there, or should I say, here.
You will continue to "pay for what you get" but you will not "get what you pay for." The price is high, the redemption downsized considerably.
A revolution with a storming of city hall would be a solution, but we are civilized "bush bunnies", so this will never be an option.
In other words, we are just plain "stupid".
That is a bitter pill to swallow-but we are accustomed to those also.
I would like to see one more employee at City Hall: the equivalent of an Auditor General.

I believe with the right person we could see improved services with LESS taxation.

And fewer trips abroad.
But we digress!
I am concerned about booze and hockey. I have done my share (well more than my share actually) of drinking and when i am having a good time, and getting thirsty cheering and jeering i am LIKELY to have more than a few beers. At that point i am more likely to behave badly towards those around me and more likely to drive home intoxicated. I dunno, maybe no one else out there is like me and it wont be a problem.
I realize it is a question of money. I also realize that i would be more likely to go to games if a could have a beer or two while i was there. So how about some ideas as to how this could be made to work for everyone?
I wont be taking my family to any more games.I wonder if Colin kindsley will be there.I hope the tax payers remember who is on city concil come election time.We all know this is just the stsrt for the flood gates.
It's about time.

You're entitled to choose not to go as a result of this decision but don't force the rest of us to live by your values.
If I want a beer at a game that should be my choice. If I'm stupid and make an arse of myself I should be booted out. I know I won't do that as I am a reasonable person but i can't speak for others.
I support those who won't be taking their families to the six games.

Auditor General like person at city hall? Gee whiz! They would have to raise our taxes again to pay for him/her. Is there no end to this madness?
People in PG won't remember all this taxing fuss come next election. They will have forgotten, moved away or just won't give a damn. And the same ninnies will be re-elected. Say anything you want about me in the press, but spell my name right. Nuthin will change. Make a memo.
Its somewhat of a sad state of affairs that in order to make more revenue they want to sell booze. Maybe the Spruce Kings can start to sell booze in their lottery home each year, and then we can sit back and see how many people buy the tickets.

The fact of the matter is that both the Spruce Kings and the Cougers fan base has fallen off drastically and they are looking at ways to stabilize their sagging revenues, however the selling of booze will not at the end of the day sell anymore tickets, and if you can go by some of the comments on this post it may in fact end up selling less tickets.

The only reason we have a **replay** board going into the Multiplex is because the City (Mayor) in their wisdom feel that this will increase attendence. Some people feel that selling booze will also increase attendence.

The fact of the matter is the Multiplex is a losing proposition, which was sold to the taxpayers as a winner. The Cougers were going to generate all kinds of revenue and everything would be great.

**FLASH** Everything is not great. Cost to run this facility is in excess of $500,000.00 per year and is increasing every year. The City gets 12.5% of the revenue and based on an average attendence of 3000 fans for 36 games, the Citys take would be approx $190,000.00 per year from the Cougers. This is not enough money to pay the salaries of three employees, say two Sambonie Drivers and one Custodian.
The owners take would be $1,320,000.00 not counting play-offs or other revenue. Hardly enough to cover salaries and expenses I would suggest.

This building with its yearly loss, which over the past 5 years amounts to approx $2,000,000.00 with probably another 3/4 Million in the next five years, doesnt make those who advocated it in the first place look very bright, and they therefore are trying whatever they can to increase revenue. 1 Million for a replay board wont do it. Nor will putting in 24 brand new cedar signs at God knows what cost, and for no apparent reason.

You would have to sell 100,000 beers at $5.00 per beer (Profit) to make up for the loss at the Multiplex of $500,000.00 annually. Not bloody likely.

I like to call it the Multiplex from time to time because the City sold the Signage to CN for approx $86000.00 per year to assist in its revenue loss. This is a 15 year contract. Its interesting to note that Kamloops signed an agreement with Interior Saving Centre for approx $120,000.00 per year, 10 year contract. **Does Kamloops have a Million dollar replay board**?

In any event I beleive that the CN signed on because of the bad publicity they were getting from the sale of BC Rail, and they wanted some good press, otherwise it would still be the Multiplex.
I think we should put in more replay boards with the largest variety of sports and games in the city in one spot, sell booze for drinking anywhere in the arena, allow smoking ..... and get rid of the reality show ice hockey ...........

This will get tons more people to use the facility and keep everyone in one spot. At the end of the evening, get the red nose busses to pick up people and drop them off at home.

No people around to bother with noise.

Sort of like the red-light district of bozzin' and smokin' and watchin' the good old boob tube and just havin' a goode olde time with the guys ....

I mean, if we can have the hockey enforcers, why not this? It is all perfectly legal goode olde down home fun.

Of course, it might make pub owners unhappy.

;-)
And we wonder why we have so many alcohol related problems in this community?

Cold beer and wine stores every 5 blocks to make access more convenient, extend the drinking hours in most lisenced facilities, add more drinking seats at hotels, restaurants, hockey rinks and anywhere else people gather.

And then wonder why we have more drinking & driving, more alcohol related domestic disputes, more employee absenteeism, more health related problems arousing from alcohol abuse and more financial ruin as a result of alcohol addiction, drug addiction, gambling and related addictions. You tell me if our community leaders are headed in the right direction? Chester
