Making a Case For Cleaning Up our Rail Yard

When you pass through Quesnel, you can’t help but realize why Rocky Mountain Train Tours decided that their tourist trains will stop in Quesnel rather than Prince George.

I had occasion to pass through Quesnel the other day and decided to have a look at what the city had to offer for the tour.

Well for starters, the street along which the tourist will walk is lined with flowers, our down town streets are lined with street people.

The well maintained parks are within throwing distance of where the train will make its nightly stop.

There are walking trails within meters of the train and there are plenty of hotels with a park like atmosphere within blocks as well.

Rocky Mountain may not have wanted us to hear the truth, but the truth of the matter is, that any sane person looking at where the trains should stop would naturally choose Quesnel.

That raises the question of what we are doing to improve the area where the Via Rail stops in tPrince George.

Either we begin to market the area (which we haven’t) or we simply will lose the stop to a place which offers the same atmosphere as Quesnel.

For God’s sake let’s not have another study as to what we should do; we all know what the problem is; now let’s get on with fixing it.

That, is one man's opinion.

On the weekend someone showed me some old newspaper clippings from PG and I could not help notice one from the early 60's of a shot along First towards the west with a caption which spoke about the ugly view and first impressions people coming across the Fraser River got when they came into town. Other than the welcome sign at the west end of the new bridge, nothing much has changed other than widening the street to 4 lanes. It is still an ugly entrance into town after getting a nice panoramic view as one comes down airport hill.

Even if the City had planted some trees on the railway side when the street was widened, it would have vastly improved the situation a long time ago at very little cost.
I see the downtown as a business oportunity. I agree what person would want to get off the train at George st and walk past Joe's Place, hookers, and drug dealers to get to their hotel fortress.

My plan will have the VIA train stopping at my soon to be campground where they can rent cabins or RV's for the night and walk the river trails.

Time Will Tell
I understand that is part of the Railway and Forestry Museum's plan ....

plus a more direct linkage of the Museum, and thus the trail and the riverfront, with the downtown.
