Site "C" Still Up For Discussion

Under the B.C. Energy Plan , the prospect of  carrying on with the Site "C" dam on the Peace River   was presented one more time.

The Minister of Energy Mines and Petroleum Resources, Richard Neufeld, says the Site C dam would be a flow through river type and would produce about 4800 GWH of power.  That is enough power to supply about 10% of the increased power needed in the province over the next few decades.

Still, there are some stumbling blocks with proceeding with that dam says Neufeld ""We need to enter and complete our negotiations with the native bands in the Treaty 8 area before we can move further.  We also will need to look at any problems that Alberta might experience from a new dam".

The land required for the project has been largely in the hands of BC Hydro since the 80”s he said so that is not a major hurdle.

Neufeld says this project is  different than the Bennett dam "Because of the nature of the project , apart from the time it will take to fill the reservoir, you will not see the wild swings in water levels that have been experienced in the Bennett dam facility. "

When might it all come together?  Neufeld  isn't saying "There has been no final date established as to when or if, the project can now move ahead, but we are optimistic."

Just build it ! Yes I know some valuable farm land is going to be flooded and it is going to change the make up of the land but trying to generate that electricity by any other viable method will screw up the environment even more. If we are so concerned about farm land then as a province we wouldn't do what is going on in the Fraser Valley.
Agreed - Get it done. We need to move ahead with hydroelectric projects and the Peace system has already been compromised so it's a logical place to continue the work. Also, we need to move ahead with generation at Castlegar where we have a flood control dam without generators.
ALL IN FAVOR OF CLEAN POWER. BY ALL MEANS, GET AT IT, WERE GOIN TO NEED IT FOR ALL OF THE UPCOMMING PROJECTS ON THE LINE IN THE NORTH.
Castlegar should have generators on it by now .Hydro was looking ot this project in the early 90's.

And have we looked at wind farms? The Queen Charlotts have more wind then our legistature. Its going to take more then just dropping a hint by Nuefeld that site C is needed. He will also have to show me that this power is for BC. Im from Mossourie you have to prove to me that this power is not for export.

If the electricity is for the Americans let the river run.
Cheers
You got it right Kimbo. When the dust settles the power will be going to the good old USA thats where they get the most money.

Lots of talk about the need for more power for Industry, however very little if any new projects on the drawing board.

The Government knows exactly what it wants to do. The above article is all smoke and mirrors. These projects are usually planned 10 to 15 years into the future, so Nuefeld is just playing **Dumb**
Same thing will happen with power as it did with oil...The will deregulate it...put it on the world market and we will end up paying more for the power we have than the American's do. We have more than enough oil in this country to supply ourselves...all the power we need to supply ourselves....But our great politicans and it doesn't matter what party...will fall to the big boys and sell it off then tell us we have to pay what the rest of the world who doesn't have it does.
Funny how in Vennesula they pay 9 cents a litre for gasoline...and still sell to the rest of the world at high prices. Sure wonder why our governments can't help us the same way....Give to the people of your country at a resonable price and charge whatever the market bares for the rest.
As long as we have politicans that bow to the big companies...were s.o.l.......
