There Will Be an Inquest Into Death of 3 Year Old
By 250 News
The Coroners Service will hold a public inquest into the death of 3-year-old Savannah Hall.
Savannah was found unresponsive in her foster-care residence on Jan. 24, 2001. She was transported to BC
Children’s Hospital in Vancouver where she later died on Jan. 26, 2001.
The Coroners Service had decided to proceed to inquest several months ago; however, an agreement was made with the RCMP to announce this decision on March 30, 2007, so as not to compromise any ongoing investigation.
The Coroners Service was notified today by RCMP that the RCMP had inadvertently released information about the inquest to others in the course of their investigation. As a result, the Coroners Service is announcing this decision publicly today.
Presiding coroner Janice McCaffrey and a five-person jury will publicly hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses in order to determine the facts surrounding the incident that resulted in the death. The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances in the future.
This inquest will be held in Prince George in 2007; schedule and location will be determined in the coming months.
