What if you could  reduce crime  by 20%  in your neighbourhood?

The recipe for making that happen is the focus of a special  day long  session at the Ramada Hotel today.  Crime Prevention Through Environmental  Design   explores the proven  direct relatinship between the  physical  environment, our fear of crime, and the opportunity  for crime to occur.

C.P.T.E.D. is the most effective  crime prevention technique  in use today.

There  is  also a special  hour and a half session in the evening.  That evening session  is free, and it starts at 7:00.

Some of the merchants in downtown Prince George had already suggested some ideas

  • using crushed stone instead of river rock as  a landscape cover as the river rocks are just  tools for smashing windows
  • placement of  materials when  the repair shift is over  i.e. a pallet full of landscaping bricks is  a pallet full of  window breaking materials.
  • shrubs too close to a doorway  provide hiding spaces
  • more lighting

The solution to reducing crime by 20% is that when the criminals are caught, instead of getting a suspended sentence or back out on the street in a few days is to lock them up for two years, less a day. We hear on the news time and time again about some career criminal who has broken into 20 - 30 houses and served no meaningful time.
Well we could use the crooks as the labour to build these parks. When the rest of the crooks see there buddies doing useful work that aught to scare the hell out of them. That might even reduce crime by 20%!
RIGHT ON !! THE CRIMINALS SHOULD BE OUT THERE IN BLACK AND WHITE STRIPED COVERALLS PICKING UP LITTER AND CLEANING STREETS. SORRY ,I GUESS THATS AGAINST THE CHARTER.
Black and white stipes?????

If I saw that I would be wondering which history movie they are in town to shoot now.

Hey, that reminds me, when was the last time there was a movie in town?
Can't have these criminals taking away union jobs now. Can we? That would never do.
Reduce crime by landscape design. I'm all for it.
Number 1 on the agenda: Napalm the entire downtown core including the halfway houses, bring in the biggest D9 Cat in the world, clear away the scum and then rebuild.
