Area in red  is section to be repaired, although  this  image (presented to the Regional District of Fraser Fort George) shows  a full 400 metres will  need to be  stabilized.

In an effort to prepare for possible floods , the Provincial Government has set aside $33 million dollars for flood protection projects.

Among the 52 projects already approved, is one aimed at shoring up the bank of the Fraser River at Shelley.

The Provincial Government has approved $240 thousand dollars for the project through the Urgent Flood Mitigation Works fund.

The photo at right was part of the presentation made to the Regional District of Fraser Fort George . It shows the area considered the most urgent,  as  the sloughing threatens two residences.

The approved Shelly project will cover less than ¼ of the length which needs to be stabilized in the long term, but will cover the 80 metres considered at immediate risk.

In a recent report to the Regional District of Fraser Fort George, the request was for more than $1.2 million dollars under the fund to stabilize 400 metres of bank on the east side of the Fraser river.

With the snow pack at record high levels in much of the province, Provincial Emergency Preparedness (PEP) is already taking steps to get ready for what could be one of the worst flood seasons in recent history. “We have distributed pallets of sandbags to some communities including McBride, Ft. St John and Dawson Creek,” says Jim Whyte Director of Operations for PEP. “More than $15 million dollars in flood preparation projects have been approved and a further 100 applications for financial assistance have yet to be reviewed.”

PEP is also holding special information sessions throughout the province, with one set for Tuesday in Prince George at the Ramada Hotel.

“We want to refresh everyone on what to do and what services are available” says Whyte.

I support projects like this to mitigate the problem before it creates bigger problems. Hopefully the work can get done before the floods hit in full force....
I don't support projects like this. I do support building near rivers and creeks, but that doesn't mean I have any money for stabilizing your decision. If you live beside the dragon, expect to get your ash kicked.
For 240 thousand they could move or rebuild those homes away from the river and never have to worry about them again.........

I'm sorry but what kinda dumbass builds beside the river and is always soooo surprised when there is a flood or bank erosion? Puhlease!
It is located in the outside part of a curve in a plateau fast flowing river. Build on the inside curve and you will gain land and have a nice beach to boot, even if it is a bit pebbly around these parts.

It will be interesting to see what they will do to protect the bank. Plants such as willows work reasonably well as long as they get a chance to root.

Over time there is virtually nothing they can do in a location like that which will stop mother nature from taking her course especially if there are weather changes which will send more water down the Fraser every spring.
Lots of big rocks should do the job.
If you want to build that close to the river. I suggest not building it on footings and walls.
But instead on floats so it can go up and down with the river level.
Maybe with an outboard and a lawn chair on the deck, you can catch dinner while having a scenic cruise.
