In an effort to prepare for possible floods , the Provincial Government has set aside $33 million dollars for flood protection projects. Among the 52 projects already approved, is one aimed at shoring up the bank of the Fraser River at Shelley. The Provincial Government has approved $240 thousand dollars for the project through the Urgent Flood Mitigation Works fund. The photo at right was part of the presentation made to the Regional District of Fraser Fort George . It shows the area considered the most urgent, as the sloughing threatens two residences. The approved Shelly project will cover less than ¼ of the length which needs to be stabilized in the long term, but will cover the 80 metres considered at immediate risk. In a recent report to the Regional District of Fraser Fort George, the request was for more than $1.2 million dollars under the fund to stabilize 400 metres of bank on the east side of the Fraser river. With the snow pack at record high levels in much of the province, Provincial Emergency Preparedness (PEP) is already taking steps to get ready for what could be one of the worst flood seasons in recent history. “We have distributed pallets of sandbags to some communities including McBride, Ft. St John and Dawson Creek,” says Jim Whyte Director of Operations for PEP. “More than $15 million dollars in flood preparation projects have been approved and a further 100 applications for financial assistance have yet to be reviewed.” PEP is also holding special information sessions throughout the province, with one set for Tuesday in Prince George at the Ramada Hotel. “We want to refresh everyone on what to do and what services are available” says Whyte.
