Prince George City Council has been getting some garbage updates from Jim Martin, the Manager of the Environmental Services/ Waste Management of the Regional District of Fraser Fort George.
The annual budget for handling garbage in the Region is 5 million dollars.
In 2004, residential waste throughout the region was up by 11%
Waste created in the demolition, land clearing section had increased by 44%, which is likely a result of efforts to clear beetle kill trees on local properties.
While just over 85 thousand tonnes of waste was buried, that was a 36% drop in the amount of waste buried back in 1994. That would indicate there is progress being made in the recycling efforts.
Martin noted that when it came to recycling,
880 tonnes of metal had been recycled
6200 tires recycled,
8700 litres of used oil recycled ( that program only started in July of last year)
There has been a 41 percent increase in the amount of compostable materials received at the waste management sites, and that has resulted in an increase in compost available for the general public. Martin says they were selling as much as they could produce.
As for the future of the Foothills Landfill site, Martin admitted, all sites have a lifespan, and that site is likely to reach it's maximum in 2020. He told Council that at that time, there could be new technologies for dealing with waste, and landfill may be a thing of the past. Councilor Cliff Dezel did add, that he was aware the Regional District has been setting aside dollars to be able to deal with whatever may come as a result of the "filling" of the Foothills Landfill site.
