Red line shows the  length of River Road being considered for upgrading for flood protection

This  evening, Prince George City Council will hear the full details of the application for Urgent Flood Mitigation Works funding.

The report outlines a request for funding to raise River Road from just west of the boat launch on the Nechako River, to just east of the Railway museum.  The average increase is  0.9 metres (3 feet) but the   full range is from a low of 0.2 metres  to  a high of 1.7 metres ( 0.67 feet to 5.5 feet).  The Province has made  $33 million dollars available this year for  flood mitigation programs,  that fund has about $10 million dollars left.

Also on the agenda for this evening’s session are two public hearings to re-zone property to allow liquor stores.

One would be located at the corner of Ferry Avenue and Highway 16 west. The other would see the Eastway Esso on Boeing Road used to set up a liquor store transferring the license from the store currently located at the Bonnet Hill Pub.

Council will be given an update on the activities of the Omineca Beetle Action Coalition, and the Downtown Business Association will make a presentation on a two day conference set for the end of the month.

If you were stupid enuf to build something where it floods nearly every year (not every 200 years) then pay for this yourself! Geezuz people are stunned! They moved out the people that used to live in there, (who else remembers the "Island cache" community?) because of flooding and then waited ten years for property values to go up and for people to forget it floods, then start to develop there again. Now they want us to pay for it.

It's way past time that the city staff started earning their pay!!!! I'm really tired of the building inspectors approving building in areas that are in risk of flooding. And it doesn't have to be beside the river for this either.
I wonder how many people in College Heights are pissed that the water runs thru their basement because the developer could'nt be bothered to landscape their lots properly and the building inspectors are either too lazy or not smart enuf to call them on it.
Looks great, doesn't it? We need to protect the industry that built there after the area was flooded without protecting themselves.

Of course, it is also good to be reminded that while the building of the R&F Museum is set higher, the yard is not, so that all the equipment and outbuildings which are there are vulnerable. Anyone got any plans for that?
The major flooding that used to take place in the Island Cache and surrounding area was mitagated when the Kenny Dam Was built. We really havent had a **big flood** in that area since then, however the potential for a flood has always been there.

It seems with the high snow pack. The release from the Kenny Dam Spillway, and the fact that one of the Turbines at Kemano is not working, has created the perfect storm.

I doubt that increasing the height of River Road will make a big difference because if I recall correctly this water will run underground and surface where ever it finds a hole. The same thing will happen through Carrie Jane Park and on down to the Fraser River. \\

Remember. Prince George is located on old river beds, and therefore we can expect some flooding when we have these types of situations.
If the water gets pas that spot it floods the downtown. Makes sense to build the dike IMO.
During the last flooding in the River Road area the water never came over the river banks, it just percolates up through the soil.
You got that right kagee. Carrie Jane Gray Park used to be a huge slough with water all the way to the car dealership. This water comes underground from the Nechako River and surfaces down through Masich Place Stadium, (Used to be a dump in this area) and below 97 and 16 before it runs through South Fort George to the Fraser River.

Why do you think the City gave this Property in exchange for the property on Highway 16 West. Because it is useless for Commercial purposes, but ok for ball fields, track fields, and horseshoe pits.

Beware of geeks bearing gifts.
I am tired of industry always wanting more on the taxpayer's backs.
They are located in the wrong area. It is time they moved and gave us back our rivers.
I agree with Foo on that point.
