The Fraser River continues to rise

The  Fraser River  continues to rise, hitting the 7 metre "action point" yesterday.

That was the mark  emergency personnell said they would use to revist their plans. Chief Fire Prevention Officer Kelly Gilday says  when the  river hit that mark a conference call was ordered and the sitaution reassessed.  "We continue to provide information  to businesses along River Road and we are monitoring the weather conditions" says Gilday.

Gilday says  they continue to monitor the levels "Our next action point is 8 metres, and if  the river  reaches that mark  we will  reassess our  situation."

Gilday says the weather is a key factor now.  " We continue to monitor the weather conditions and  we should have a 5-7 day lead time before the  Fraser comes up.  We have  increased our site inspections and the Emergency Operations Centre Managers are  well aware of  the situation."

The critical  flood mark for Prince George is 9.2 metres.

Earlier this week the Regional District of Fraser Fort George was advertising flood information, reminding those in low lying areas to take some precautions such as moving items to higher ground and  having  72 hours of  provisions  ready, preparing an evacuation plan and  checking the link to the  Provincial Emergency Preparedness site ( www.pep.bc.ca) .  Thursday, the Ministry of Agriculture issued an advisory  on making preparations to handle livestock in the event of flooding.

Does every spring!
Remember when the Cache used to flood every year? Ice chunks floating in the street.
And still with hundreds of years worth of data showing that rivers flood their banks regularly, people still build right next to them.

Much like all the fancy homes along the Nechako river....they are all newer homes, so it was not like they did not realize the potential to flood was there....yet they built them anyways.

So its a bit hard to feel sorry for them when their basement is full of water, and the patio set floats away.
year after year, we flood
I went for a drive this week looking at headwater levels and I've never seen them that high before. The Chilako especially is over its banks in a big way right back to hits source. Even the feeder streams are bursting their banks right now.
The only good thing about all this water is McMillan creek actually has enough water in it for the fish to swim through to the river. Last year it was almost dry.
Salmon Valley is high. Another foot or so and the Salmon Valley campground is under water. They still have the open sign out front though.

When I was out at Salmon Valley today I noticed someone is newly trying to block all access to the south side of the river west of the highway. Looks like he's setting up a unibomber shed right in front of the government waste bin, which he is also claiming. A lot of people that use Salmon Valley as a close to town place to take a dip are going to be pissed this summer when they come across that. The guy is basically using his uni-bomber shed, some ribbon and a private property sign to block access and claim a good 10km of up stream camp sites and tubbing launch spots.
hmmm weird. Hopefully to pass his days he will pick up all the broken beer bottles. If I see any while i'm there I pick them up. I'm curious now to see how Salmon river looks.
the campsite has new owners doesnt it Chad?
It was for sale last year. I'm not sure if it turned hands or not. I agree about the glass bottles. It should be illigal to have glass bottles on any beach in BC. Fine em $500 bucks a bottle IMO.
Salmon Valley area has had a problem for year with parties and broken glass. It would be nice to catch the idiots who do the smashing but that is not likely to happen unfortunately!
A fine of 500 bucks a bottle seems fair.......
