National Day of Mourning

Flags on all provincial buildings are to be at half mast today to recognize the National Day of Mourning for killed or injured workers.
Last year in B.C., 160 workers lost their lives as a result of workplace accidents or illness.
In Prince George, the day will be marked with the official unveiling of the memorial to killed and injured workers. The unveiling will take place at 11:00 this morning at the southwest corner of Patricia Boulevard and Queensway.
The memorial incorporates four flagpoles that will be used every April 28th in the Day of Mourning ceremony, and features a sculpture by Quesnel artist Bert deVink.
The artwork is described as "a steel structure that will give the impression of being twisted while collapsing, and incorporates a brass textured sun and bird."
deVink says of his design "The expressions of hope, love and strength produced by the bird, combined with the warming and healing light of the sun gives an emotional but positive feeling to a monument that honours killed and injured workers."
