Run For The Cure Needs Volunteers

Despite vacancies in some key volunteer positions, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s BC/Yukon Chapter maintains the 2007 CIBC Run For The Cure will be held in Prince George at the end of September.
Last year’s run at UNBC raised more than $148-thousand dollars and attracted more than 700 participants.
While Volunteer Committees in other communities have already begun meeting to gear up for the Foundation’s signature national event, the Prince George Committee is without its Co-Run Directors and is also recruiting for a Media Coordinator, Team Co-Coordinators, Registration Co-Coordinators, Key Account Stewardship Coordinator, and Distribution Coordinator.
But Volunteer & Community Relations Director, Julie McMillan, insists there are no plans to cancel the run. "That’s not an issue," says McMillan, "It’s a really valued and important event in the community of Prince George."
She says right now, the Volunteer Committee is getting direction from staff at the Chapter level, while the search continues for the Co-Run Directors.
Recruiting efforts began late last fall after the 2006 Co-Directors stepped down. McMillan says, "We’ve had a few applicants, just not quite what we’re looking for - we’re looking for someone, certainly, who has previous experience working with a committee, so leadership skills, somebody who’s been involved as a volunteer with a non-profit organization."
Nationally, $26-million dollars was raised for breast cancer research, education and awareness during last year’s run and more than 170-thousand Canadians participated in 50 communities.
