The NDP bounced back in the two coastal ridings last night taking both Skeena and Prince Rupert- Queen Charlotte Islands.

In Skeena, Robin Austin of the NDP defeated Incumbent Roger Harris 5954 to 5515 . The Greens, under Patrick Hayes, got 590 votes. The Liberals stance on the Alcan Smelter and the reduction of the work force, had played heavily in the result with the people of Kitimat taking a strong stance.

In Prince Rupert, despite the fact the provincial government had announced big plans with a container port,  the traditionally left leaning constituency opted to  return to its roots and elected Gary Earl Coons of the NDP with 5621 or 53.89% of the vote.  Incumbent Bill Belsey of the Liberals received 4014 votes while the Greens, under Hondo Arendt, got 597.
