Former Ft. St John Mayor Steve Thorlakson says according to the oil experts, drilling in the Peace Region will drop by about 40% this year. That comes on top of a 15% drop in drilling in 2006.

"I think that a lot of overheating has come out of the economy" says Thorlakson "People were being hired whether they had any ability or not and this cut back is hopefully going to change that."

It hasn’t affected the economy says Thorlakson " We haven’t had a drop in the population , for example we used to build about 20 housing units a year, last year we built about 250  just trying to catch up with the demand ."   At the same time ,he says there are proposals before the city to build  three new hotels. “I’m not sure all of them will go"

The population of Ft St. John rose to 17,402 in the latest census from 2006, up from 16051 in 2001
