The application to rezone the Queensway site where the Backpacker Motel  sits has been filed.
City of Prince George Staff are reviewing the application now and will make a report that will go to City Council after there has been an opportunity to meet with the Community.
The application calls for a change from the current C5 “Visitor –Commercial” zoning to one that would be site specific.
The   application proposes a three storey   building that would have approximately 30 units.  Further details will be made available at a meeting with the community.
The date for that community meeting has not yet been  set, but City Staff believe the full report and application will be presented to Council before the end of June.  It is expected the public hearing would take place two weeks after that.
The site was purchased by B.C. Housing  a couple of years ago to be developed as a  facility to  assist the homeless and those with addiction or mental health issues  move off the streets and  into  society.

That should help the downtown. House social problem people close to our beautiful downtown.

Is City Hall making plans to pack up and move to College Heights? That should be an obvious move to escape what City councillors have done over the years to the location.
Give it a rest, where would you suggest that they be housed? Or would you rather they stay on the streets?
I think its a prime location to assist people. I live in this area and see homeless, etc all the time. I would rather be pro-active than reactive. I wish BC Housing Luck - and it will be nice to get rid of this vacant ugly building on Queensway - beats putting in another used car lot....
"social problem people"

I love the term. That could include people like you YDPC. It is all in the way one looks at who is the problem. Right? Could be anyone of us.

It takes a community. Some are more needy than others. Some are more helpful than others.

Some think help works this way. Some think help works that way.

One thing, however, remains constant, whichever side of the equation you think you are on, the other side has the "social problem people" without whom the world would be perfect.
Given the work I have done I can tell you that there is an urgent need for housing for individuals with mental health issues. This is a golden opportunity to create a facility to assist these individuals co-exist in our community. The problem is that the provincial government insists on choosing who will be housed in this facility. Given the overwhelming proof that our government is clueless and in fact extremely damaging to any cause intended to help those with mental illness or disability, most service providers will not enter into a partnership with the devil. Who does this leave to run the establishment? How can creditable people be involved when the government has alienated itself from those who would be appropriate to run this facility. This is an great opportunity to do something good. Watch closely as our friends in Victoria turn this into a mess of epic proprtions. History does not lie when told accurately.
its a good spot. Keep them downtown near facilities ( psych, hospital, social services etc) where they can readily access them without having to travel too far. I know the downtown merchants won't like this, but downtown is a lost cause in terms of revitalisation.
These people aren't the trouble makers in PG. Its the ones in the drug market that should be driven out of the neighbourhoods.
"Its the ones in the drug market that should be driven out of the neighbourhoods."

Send them to the Kingston maximum security federal lockup for a few decades.
I agree that it should be used for people with mental health issues. It is a good location for that, and I know from experience that it is likely they will be good neighbors.

However, housing people with drug addictions in The Crew's own backyard sounds like a mega crack house in the works. Might as well save one unit for a local police office.
Good to see all of you are in agreement that the downtown is a dumping ground for the "residents". HeeHee!

Obviously no one on here has any stake or RRSP money in the downtown.

Give it a rest, Runner46? Don't think so. Someone has to look underneath to see why it stinks.
When it comes to people with mental issues, I wouldn't say we're dumping them. That's not fair. The location is good because of it's proximity to the downtown and essential services. It doesn't detract from the neighborhood or cause social issues. They are just you and me, pal.

I stand firm in my opinion that it would be a really STUPID move to make it a recovery facility for users. That would just be really, really, really dumb.
