Barkerville will open on Monday May 14th and the Board of Directors is optimistic.
The year end report for the historic town won’t likely be released for another few weeks, but the bottom line was hoped to be better than the fiscal year which wrapped up March 2006. That report indicated Barkerville suffered a loss of just under $190 thousand dollars.
“This past year was still a challenge” says Barkerville Board of Director’s Chair Murry Krause “ We still had to work hard to let people know we were open, but we are moving ahead with other funding ideas.”
Barkerville is recognized as being a site with not only provincial historical significance, but one of national importance as well as it was a key in Canada’s gold rush.
Krause says the Barkerville Heritage Trust will look towards raising funds through corporate donations and will attempt to secure some federal funding.
There are also efforts underway to continue tourism –cultural heritage destination discussions with the Chinese as Barkerville was home to many who had made the move from China.
Barkerville will have its grand opening on June 16th when it unveils its Theatre Royal Show.
