UNBC has officially opened it's new Teaching and Learning Centre. The $31 million dollar facility provides enough space for the University to grow by another 460 students, and gives several degree programs their own "floor" for studies.
With two wings, east and west, and four floors on each wing, the new building provides 92 thousand square feet of space for instruction.
The central atrium is awash in light with four floors of glass on the north and south sides provide.
On hand for the official opening, were representatives from the Provincial government, the Municipal and Regional Governments, and the University.
UNBC President Don Cozzetto presented to Deputy Premier Shirley Bond, a framed set of aerial photos of the university showing its growth. The photo on the left is UNBC when it first opened, while the photo on the right shows the university as it is today:
Deputy Premier Shirley Bond, Agriculture Minister Pat Bell, and John Rustad, MLA for Prince George Omineca, were joined by Acting Mayor Don Zurowski and UNBC President Don Cozzetto in officially cutting the ribbon to declare the new facility "open".
Students standing along the seccond and third floor walkways, tossed stramers into the crowd as the declaration was made.
Bond told the crowd, "When I look at this building and see how beautiful it is, I am incredibly proud to live in Prince George."
The Teaching and Learning Centre is part of more than $64 million dollars in captal projects at UNBC since 2001.
The other projects include the $20.5 million for the Northern Sport Centre, $12 million for the Northern Health Sciences Centre, and $2.8 million for the Geoffrey Weller Library.
