    Opinion 250 has learned the vehicle recovered from the Nechako River on Sunday, contained a “substantial amount of marijuana.”  One source says there was enough pot to get most of Vanderhoof high.

The circumstances leading up to the vehicle sinking in the Nechako River remain unclear.  What is known is that an 18 year old Simon Fraser University student was behind the wheel when it went down early Saturday morning off the float plane access road to the Nechako River in Vanderhoof.  A passenger in the vehicle escaped, but the driver, Daljit Sandhu remains missing.

The passenger was taken to Vanderhoof Hospital treated for hypothermia, and released.  He remains in the Vanderhoof area.

Search and Rescue and the RCMP had started a search on Saturday, but stopped that search  over  concern over the  level of the river and the turbidity.   Police say they had intended on resuming the search on Sunday but the family made its own arrangements.

The family contacted people from Fort St. James and asked them to assist in a search   After reading the water, the two jet boaters informed Police about how they would be able to, safely, hook on to the vehicle.

Once that was done, the family contacted a tow company which came to the river bank and pulled the SUV out of the Nechako.

Police say the bills for the jet boats and towing to recover the vehicle will be covered by the RCMP.

The family has requested jet boaters to come to Vanderhoof to assist them in trying to find Daljit.

Police say there was definitely no chase involved, and they continue to investigate the matter.

The following  comment was received;
