Cameron Street Bridge Update

Prince George Mayor Colin Kinsely says with CN's announcement  for the intermodal facility at  First Avenue the need  for a crossing to replace the Cameron street Bridge is even more  important.  "So we are going to fan out our appeals for funding, as  it will be needed for the intermodal  port, and dare I say the Gateway project as it is part  of our access to Asia."

The Mayor says there will bea significant increase in truck traffic that  cannot be expected to  travel through the heart of the City.

Councilor Don Zurowski wanted to know, "If the funding was available immediately,  when  could we be driving on the bridge?"

Frank Blues says "That is the 64 milion dollar question" but there are plenty of hoops to go through, including committmentson graqnts,  and the fact  theremust be approval under the Navigable Waters Act and  environmental  approvals.  He says there are a number of  key issues that need to be addressed including  demolition of the existing structure.

Blues says he expects the contract  for the design  will be awarded and signed by the first week of June.  His best guess for a completion date?  "At this time, we are looking at a two year process, but I can't confirm that until  we get into the process.  That  would see the completion of the bridge  at the end of October 2009."

That is not what Council wanted to hear.

"This is a safety issue, its an issue about getting our goods to market, it is affecting our community in a number of ways" says Councilor Deborah Munoz.

Councilor Brian Skakun  says  the Staff have done their job "They have done everything we have asked them to do .  We asked them to come up with a cheaper option we've asked them to find sources of funding and those things take time.  My thank you to Frank Blues and the City staff  because the work they have done will save the people of this city a lot of  money."

Councilor Murry Krause says Staff has tried to resolve this  issue, "They have done everything we have asked them to do."

Councilor Don Zurowski says he cannot believe government has not come forward with two thirds of the funding before now.

The Mayor says his target was the fall of 2008,"But when you don't see any work it doesn't look like anything is going to happen."   The Mayor says he has spokem to the Province about the possibility of getting some dollars through the Mountain Pine Beetle fund "Under the mountain pine beetle funding some beetle killed wood would have to be used,I told him to build the whole damn thing  of wood I don't care, just  get it built."

There may be  funding available  through the beetle fund as the bridge woulde be a benefit to the  beetle logging industry in reducing  the length of hauling the  logs.

"Under the mountain pine beetle funding some beetle killed wood would have to be used,I told him to build the whole damn thing of wood I don't care, just get it built."

I think that is a wonderful idea. Replace the bridge as it is now with a brand new structure made of MPB pressure treated wood. It will last a few decades, will not change the appearance, can probably get some heritage dollars and certainly lots of publicity, in addition to MPB dollars. The accesses would not have to be changed as long as it stays as a single lane bridge. It can probably be constructed for $2 to $3 million.

After the few decades are over, a bypass with new heavy industry sites will be in place and the bridge will get less and less use. At that time it can be shut down and become a pedestrian bridge.

??????? I believe most of the beetle killed wood is to the south and west of us, not the north.

Why would trucks coming from the south and west have to go over that bridge? What is north of the bridge they would be trying to get to that they would not have better access to via the Hwy 97 bridge over the Nechako?
Good idea, or just fix it two-years ago for under a million and worry about it in ten years time after a ring road is in place that makes the bridge irrelevant.

The sad thing is the provincial government obviously has no plan on what to do based on any foreward looking projections. The only thing more stunning than the mayors strategic planning is the lack of such by the provincial government.
We need the bridge. Why arent they replacing the whole bridge? Why put a new structure on an old foundation, if there is going to be millions spent, and we al know there will be cost overruns because nothing related to gov't projects comes in under budget, lets replace the piers too.
What a waste of money .... fix our roads then maybe think about replace it later.... man not like we are going to die if we do not replace the bridge i can think of better ways to spend few million bucks ... like hire more RCMP .... time we think about the people of p.g and safed .....

amen
Here we go again let do a 1/2 ass job boys
get her done
CHANGE THE CITY'S NAME FROM PRINCE GEORGE THE SPRUCE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD, TO PRINCE GEORGE, 1/2 @$$ WHERE WE DONT WANT YOUR BUSINESS TO SET UP
You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand that this particular site is in an environmentally sensitive area. How many times do they have to be told? Just leave it alone and pick a bridge site to tie in with a ring road. We have to get hazardous goods out of the bowl.
"lets replace the piers too"

Sure, might as well. The river is perfectly good too, the same as the piers. While replacing the perfectly good piers, why don't we replace the perfectly good river?

I love replacing stuff. Makes everything feel so nice and shiny new.

;-)
As long as you are keeping it a single lane bridge, has anyone thought about using a bailey Bridge as an adequate replacement?

They will last for years and are really cheap, and will still do the job you need it to do.

If you are however looking to spend gazoodles of taxpayer bucks on some snazzy looking thing instead of something functional, Mayor Colin has lots of other political palms to grease maybe?

Damn, the gun's jammed...!
Ha ha ha!

"??????? I believe most of the beetle killed wood is to the south and west of us, not the north."

Lots of logs and chips go over the bridge. Lakeland Mills (for example) on River Rd., has a large tenure North of town. It's a legitimate claim.

"...has anyone thought about using a bailey Bridge as an adequate replacement? "

Port Coquitlam used to have a single-lane Bailey Bridge over the Coquitlam River, from the Lougheed Hwy. It must have lasted 20 years or better.
It is 8 p.m. The sun is shining on the bridge; there are 15 cyclists crossing it - now isn't that a beautiful picture? PG is more than trucks, planes, trains and automobiles.
There is beauty, there is physical activity, there is nature and there is respect for heritage. Don't I wish!
As Ive said a Hundred times, and of course not one person to my knowledge actually got the point so I will say it once again.

This new bridge fiasco is a Sham.

The old bridge was closed for safety reasons 20 Months ago, however what most people either forget, or they never knew, is that the Bridge can be repaired to handle both car and truck traffic as it has in the past.

The cost of the repair is $750,000.00 and this cost would include resurfacing. This bridge could have been up and running over a year ago.

The safety problem is some rot in a couple of beams that would have to be replaced, and some other maintenance work. Once repaired we could keep it up and running for another 15 years or more with approx $150,000.00 per year maintenance.

Total cost to keep the old bridge for 15 years. Roughly $3,000,000.00

Cost of a new bridge which will only handle the same traffic as the old bridge.

City borrows $5.95 Million over 20 years.
Total Cost $10,000,000.00
$1.5 Million from development cost charge reserve for roads, and $2 Million from the Federal and Provincial Governments.
Total Cost. $13,500,000.00. Difference $10,500,000.00

Thats assuming that it will be built on time and on budget.

The repair cost of $750,000.00 was published in the paper and this information was given out by Frank Blues who was the Transportation Manager at City Hall at the time.

I personally discussed this feature with Mr Blue last year and he admitted that the bridge could be repaired and resurfaced for that amount.

What we have here is a classic example of taxpayers money being wasted.

How many people will get off their fat ----- and sign the petition to stop this fiasco? I think not many.

If bitching and complaining were a saleable product, this town would be rich.

Have a nice day.

So let's fix the damn thing then, and giterdun !
