Crews fill portable Gabion Dike System in lower Mainland
It is called a Gabion Basket Portable Dike System.
It is faster and more efficient than sandbags and there is one kilometer of it waiting in Prince George should it be needed.
Gabions are a quickly deployed system that uses foldable wire-mesh containers five metres long, one metre deep and one metre wide. They can be rushed to trouble spots, unfolded and filled with sand by front-end loaders. That means there could be a new dike in place in a fraction of the time it would take to manually fill sandbags and put them in place.
The Province spent about $1.1 million dollars for 9.5 kilometres of Gabion basket portable dikes.
In addition to the one kilometer of Gabion baskets sitting in Prince George, there is also a portable dike system sitting in Kamloops and in use in Mission. The additional gabion baskets will be stored in Chilliwack and will be deployed as needed.
