16 and Domano Focus of Crash Reduction Program

The intersection of Highway 16 and Domano is the focus of a new program
The intersection of Highway 16 and Domano and T yner Boulevards is the most dangerous intersection in the city. It has the highest incidence of crashes, 60 in the past year.
In an effort to reduce that, ICBC brought together police, road engineers, maintenence experts, and drivers to see what the real issues were. Once the stats had been reviewed, it was clear the highest number of accidents were rear end crashes, and they were most likely to happen on the ramp leading from Domano to Highway 16, or the ramp from Tyner to Highway 16 west.
So, a three prong approach is being taken. Engineering, Education, and enforcement.
It starts with new signage. A sign has been added to the east bound lanes approaching the intersection indicating this is a high crash area. ICBC Regional Manager David Dickson says most drivers will reduce their speed when they see such a sign and that should help.
There will also be a radar sign indicating speed .(shown at right) RCMP Sergeant Guy Tremblay says , to start, the sign will be manned by auxiliary members, but police officers will also be at the sign from time to time, equipped with REAL radar to nab speeders. Tremblay says the intersection will also be equipped with red light cameras to catch the plate numbers of vehicles which run the red light. Those cameras will be operating 24-7.
This is a pilot project, and Dickson says he is hopeful of seeing a reduction in crash numbers within months.

When you enter from Southridge there might be traffic cutting in for the lane to Canadian Tire at the same time you are looking to merge, bang you rearend the guy going to Canadian Tire and we all know whoes fault it is, yours not the idiot that designed this intersection. If you want to go to the universty from southridge there are three lanes that have to be crossed in a short distance, brilliant.
There is another game to play at this intersection. Most of the year there are no lines, no reflectors, nothing to tell you what lane to be in. Know there is merging traffic, lane changing traffic, poor traffic lights with little or no warning and a red light camera causing people to do panic stops and no lanes. So now folks they do a photo op and blame everything on the driver, sounds like a scam to me.
