16 and Domano Focus of Crash Reduction Program

The intersection of Highway  16 and Domano is  the focus of  a new  program

The intersection of Highway 16 and Domano and T yner  Boulevards is the most dangerous intersection in the city.  It has the  highest incidence of  crashes, 60 in the past year.

In an effort to reduce that,  ICBC brought together police,  road engineers,  maintenence experts,  and drivers to see what the real issues were.  Once the  stats had been reviewed, it was clear the highest  number of accidents were rear end crashes, and they were most likely to happen   on the  ramp leading from Domano to Highway 16, or the  ramp  from  Tyner to Highway 16 west.

So,   a three prong approach is being taken.  Engineering,  Education, and enforcement.

It starts with new signage.  A sign  has been added to the  east bound lanes approaching the  intersection indicating this is a high crash area.  ICBC Regional Manager David Dickson says most drivers will reduce their speed when they see such a sign and that should help.

There will also be a radar sign indicating  speed .(shown at right) RCMP Sergeant Guy Tremblay says , to start, the  sign will be manned  by auxiliary members, but  police officers will also be at the sign from time to time,  equipped with  REAL radar to  nab  speeders.  Tremblay says the  intersection will also be equipped with  red light cameras to  catch  the plate numbers of vehicles which run the red light.  Those cameras will be operating 24-7.

This is a pilot project, and  Dickson says he is hopeful  of seeing  a reduction in  crash numbers within months.

Crash Facts:

The other two  most dangerous  intersections in Prince George are:

  • Cariboo Hwy and Hwy16   /   40 crashes in 2006
  • Ferry Avenue and Hwy 16  /   50 crashes in 2006
The most common types of crashes are:
1.   rear-end crashes
2.   merging
3.   left turn rear-end crashes
4.   speed-related crashes
  • The most crash-prone months of the year at the intersection of Hwy 16 and Domano Blvd are February, June, August, and December (overall highest month)
  • The most crash-prone days of the week at this intersection are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
  •  In the majority of cases, weather was clear and road surfaces dry when the collision occurred

What a scam. Yes the intersection is very dangerous but because it is a p*** poor design and the authorities know that. The scam is putting all the blame on the driver because we know it will cost money to rework the intersection and that money is better spent for the olympics. I believe that who ever put their stamp of approval on this present intersection should be investigated. When entering the intersection from the east side there is no warning that the light will change. Sure there is a yellow but how much of a warning is that. In Europe the light will go from green, flashing yellow, steady yellow then red, lots of warning. At this intersection when people are close and the light goes yellow they panic and hit the brakes hard because they are scared of the red light cameras. I wonder how many accidents that red light camera has caused.

When you enter from Southridge there might be traffic cutting in for the lane to Canadian Tire at the same time you are looking to merge, bang you rearend the guy going to Canadian Tire and we all know whoes fault it is, yours not the idiot that designed this intersection. If you want to go to the universty from southridge there are three lanes that have to be crossed in a short distance, brilliant.

There is another game to play at this intersection. Most of the year there are no lines, no reflectors, nothing to tell you what lane to be in. Know there is merging traffic, lane changing traffic, poor traffic lights with little or no warning and a red light camera causing people to do panic stops and no lanes. So now folks they do a photo op and blame everything on the driver, sounds like a scam to me.
Please bring that *Your Speed* sign for a few days to Highland Drive! Years ago Highland Drive had several 50km/h signs posted along its entire length on both sides. It also had *No Trucks* signs at both ends.

The city took all the signs down - attempts to get them back again have been unsuccessful.

Result: Regular observable speeds by cars, trucks and buses range anywhere from 60km/h
to 80km/h and vehicles can be seen exceeding the (unposted) limit of 50km/h by even more than that!

One of these days there will be a monumental pile up and it won't be a pretty sight!

That continuation from the top of Ospika ever gonna happen? What a bunch of do nothing ninnies. When Moose learns percentages will probably be the same time they continue that alternative to that nasty intersection. What fools they must be at city hall. IMO.
Another classic case of Prince George's poor city design - lets build roads anywhere and worry about traffic later. Anyone at city hall ever hear of an overpass? They did build one for Walmart.....
I agree with virtually everyone here, it is the worst designed intersection in town. It is the spot where all the minimum design standards came to a head, no merge landes, crossover of traffic mergin within distances that are far too short to accommodate them .. etc. etc.

And it is going to get worse as traffic picks up in the future. This intersection needs an overpass, period!!!

As I said elsewhere on this site, they are building a fly over in Kelowna from hwy 97 to the new UBC campus at a cost of close to $15million. Tyner is an access road to UNBC. The expected traffic count is likely about the same. It is on a provincial/federal highway. Why do we get the short end of the stick?
I just watched the local news on the above news release, what a bunch of cow droppings. MLA Rustad you are going to go a long way. Notice where the high crash warning sign is located, right in the intersection now how dumb is that. Right in the middle of the merge lanes. Come on Dickson get your act together. Come on Rustad that intersection is screaming for an overpass, the blood is on your hands!
