Kamloops has  been  given the  nod to host the 2011 Western Canada Games,  and Events Prince George’s Virginia Sprangers’ first reaction? "Congratulations to Kamloops, they were a  worthy adversary, I hope  they have a successful games."

Sprangers was the driving force behind the Prince George bid for the  2011  event, and  she admits, she is disappointed "Certainly we are  disappointed, but, we will  meet with the selection committee next week and  go through a de-briefing to find out  how we could have  improved our  presentation."  Sprangers says  Prince George did  a  very good job, "We have excellent facilities, and  we put our best foot forward."

Sprangers  says the City isn’t giving up, "We will now work towards  trying to  win the bid to host the 2011 Canada Winter Games.  We already have a large number of people who are interested in working on that project."

Premier Gordon Campbell  announced  yesterday that Kamloops would  host the  Western Canada Summer games, an event he says is expected to  put some $10 million dollars into  the Kamloops economy.

Ms. Spranger thinks we have excellent facilities here in P.G. I don't think so. Either did the committee that selected Kamloops. Maybe by 2011 we might have a public campground. That is if anyone in 2011 can afford to drive up here. Sure hope we folk in P.G. don't get devastated like McKenzie is now. In all, it should be interesting.
Winter? ….. other than arena and cross country skiing we have zip …. Think of ski hills in the Okanagan – Kamloops, Vernon, Kelowna, Penticton – They all have the downhill parts as well as accommodation.

Unless someone takes the Purden facility to the highway, and puts snow making on the hill, it will not cut the mustard. It is also further form town than any of the facilities in the Okanagan.

It is time to go for more realistic goals and put wahgt are essentially civic employees working from our tax dollars to more realistic use.

Better facilities at Purden might be a nice drawing card for keeping people in town. Powder King is a bid far and on the "primitive" side I find. Costs for gas, not environmetnally friendly, and puts people travelling that far at more of a risk than going to Tabor and Purden.
No Virginia, there is not a Santa Claus.
We could use the Hart Highlands Ski Hill. Ok, so it doesn't have a chair lift.

PG could try to bid for events we are strong on. River boat racing would be a given. Start someplace up the Nechako and race to Willow River. Or start at Willow and go to Ilse Pierre. Lots of great features and waters to play in.

Or some Event that combines land and water competition. Not many places can out class PG in water access and variety.

hmmmm .... I was checking to find some details on the Canada games ....

The 2011 Canada Winter Games seem to be spoken for already. The games are held every 4 years. This year they were in Whitehorse. It would seem reasonable that the next one thus is already spoken for. And so it is - Halifax, NS. known for its majestic mountains and precipitous down hill skiing.

There is also some unverifyable information that Nunavut will host the games in 2015. If that is the case we could try for the 2019 games.

Of course, the first thing we need is someone who knows some of the basics about when the Canada Winter games are held and which ones are already spoken for.

BTW, in order to get into the 2019 games, we first have to wait for the province to be the chosen one. Then come the communities within the province. It works the same way as with the summer games.

BTW, for those who were not aware, and I was certainly one of them since I do not follow sports too much, Kamloops hosted the CANADA summer games in 1993. Burnaby hosted them in 1973. So, Kamloops now is hosting the 2011 Western Canada Summer games. It looks like the selection committee was looking for the best community and facilities and did not care about spreading the opportunity around.
