Patricia Utz points to the water from the Bulkley River that is creeping up onto her Ebenezer Flats home
Residents of more than 24 homes in the Ebeneeer Flats area of Smithers, have been forced to leave their homes as the Bulkley River spills its banks.
Patricia Utz is one of those residents.
She says she has real concerns about the makeshift dikes. “If that dike along the river where the old bridge is, breaks, and comes through the sandbags, we very likely will have a gush of water coming through and there is nothing to stop it.”
Officials with the Regional District say potential danger to life and health, along with record breaking river levels were the reasons for the evacuations.
The Bulkley River is running at levels never seen before.
