Bulkley River Rages through Telkwa
The Fraser River in Prince George seems to have peaked, and the Skeena River is starting to recede, but the Bulkley River is showing no mercy through Telkwa and Smithers.
Residents of the Village of Telkwa are advised of road closures effective immediately due to flooding:
* 5th Street between Hope Avenue and Eddy Park
* Riverside Park from Hankin Avenue to Hill Avenue
There are currently no evacuation alerts or evacuation orders in effect for the Village of Telkwa.
The Village of Telkwa is requesting that people residing on the downtown side of the Bulkley River avoid pumping flood water into the local sewage system. This is having a negative impact on local infrastructure. Residents with questions or concerns are asked to call the Village of Telkwa office at 250-846-5212.
It is also extremely important that people exercise extreme caution around rivers with high flows:
* Avoid rivers and creeks and surrounding banks because of erosion caused by high water volume.
* NEVER attempt to drive on a flooded roadway- Turn around - don't drown!
* Never attempt to walk or swim through flood water.
* Be especially alert at night. It is harder to recognize flood dangers when it is dark.
