Local State of Emergency in P.G. Over
By 250 News
The good news is the state of emergency declared in Prince George has been rescinded, the same goes for the evacuation alert, and the evacuation order given to residents of Farrell Street.
The River Forecast Centre is confident the threat for further flooding on the Upper Fraser is over, at least as it applies to a threat from rapid snowpack melt. A week of rain could still cause problems.
The bad news, there is still one half of the snowpack to come down in the Skeena and Bulkley basins, and a couple of days of heat could see river levels increase again. There is also a flood watch in effect for the community of Vanderhoof
The Provincial Emergency Program Manager of Operations, Jim Whyte, says the focus of effort is now shifting to recovery for families and communities.
“For families, it isn’t just a clean up. You have to ensure there are no safety issues with a furnace, that there is no mould, that the septic field is o.k., so these processes will take months.” Whyte says there are also the repair and recovery issues for communities “Communities have to restore electricity, water services, natural gas, make road repairs, and of course communities can apply for disaster relief as well.”
