Mackenzie Session Set for Tonight
By 250 News
The meeting set for this evening in Mackenzie will hopefully dispell some rumours says District of Mackenzie Mayor Stephanie Killam, "You know how rumours spread, and the speakers who will speak at the meeting this evening will be there to assure residents they will not pull the rug out from underneath them. There will still be health care, there will still be schools."
The meeting has been called to deal with the planned indefinite closure of the Mackenzie sawmill. Canfor has announced the closure will likely take effect this August, and there is no telling when, if ever, the mill would reopen. The closure will have a direct impact on 450 employees and their families, as well as the trickle down effect on logging operators.
Killam expects representatives from many of the same organizations which attended a session a little over a week ago to attend this evening’s meeting. "Northern Health, UNBC, School District 57, CNC, those who are able to attend will be there" says Killam.
She says she is aware that some Canfor executives have been working with mill staff to see what might be done at the mill to reverse the decision, but there is nothing at this point that would indicate Canfor is about to change its mind.
The meeting is set to start at 6:00 this evening at the Mackenzie Curling Rink.
