A major fire overnight has leveled  the Nova Star  four storey hotel that was under construction  in Fort St. John.

The cause of the fire is not known, but three neighbouring motels on the Alaska Highway strip between 93rd and 100th streets had to be evacuated including the Blue Bell,  had to be evacuated, forcing  as many as 100 guests into the night .

That section of the Alaska Highway remains closed. and  power to the area has been  cut off.

The Tim Horton’s  on 96th street , near the scene of the  2 a.m. blaze, opened  up overnight to  help  those who were forced from their rooms.

Emergency services has set up a special hotline for those needing assistance, that  number is 785-4592 .

This reminds me of the apartment fire in a three storey building being built by Central Homes in the late 1970's or so. It was close to completion and the firewalls remained standing, unable to stop the spread since the doors were open during construction or were not even in place yet. The enitre building was lost.

Smurf Village was constructed in its place.

Then there was the more recent Yellowhead fire of another three storey wood frame structure where fire separations were questionable in an occupied building.

This appears to have been a four storey wood structure. Typical "accidental" causes of fire at that stage is roofing process or plumbers using torches.

One of the dangers of wood construction. I really think that using wood for this type of building has to be questioned both from the point of view of safety and various aspects of quality such as sound barriers from floor to floor, room to adjacent room, and room to corridor.
