The Tampa Bay Lightning selected Prince George Cougars centre Dana Tyrell in the second round, 47th overall of the NHL entry draft in Columbus Ohio. The 18-year-old, who scored 30 goals in his second WHL season, is the second highest drafted forward in Prince George Cougar history. The New York Rangers Blair Betts was chosen 33rd overall by the Calgary Flames in the second round of the 1998 NHL entry draft.
Cougars defencemen Chris VanDuyhoven is projected as a late round draft pick.
