Prince George Cougars Dana Tyrell was one of four Western Hockey Leaguers selected in the second round of the NHL entry draft in Columbus Ohio. The 18 year-old centre was the first pick for the Tampa Bay Lightning, chosen 47th overall. Tampa Bay traded their first round selection to the Minnesota Wild. The Vancouver Giants and Calgary Hitmen led the WHL teams in drafted players, each with four. The Western Hockey League had nine players chosen in the opening round of the NHL draft, the most first round WHL picks since 1982. That year Gord Kluzak was number one overall. Another WHL defenceman, Gary Nylund, who played one season of minor hockey in Prince George, was third overall.
A total of 37 WHL players were chosen in the ’07 draft to lead major junior selections.
The BC Hockey League was the most popular junior A league for NHL teams. Seven players from the BCHL were drafted into the NHL including Kyle Turris (3rd overall) and Riley Nash (21st overall) in the opening round.
Prince George Cougars defenceman Chris VanDuyhoven was not selected in the draft, but ex-Cougar Dan Gendur was chosen in the 7th round by the Vancouver Canucks.
