Vanderhoof Braces for Higher Water Levels
By 250 News
About 350 people turned out in Vanderhoof yesterday to help with sandbagging efforts in the community.
Yesterday, the Nechako River Flow was at 726 cubic metres per second in the morning, and by 5 p.m. had risen to 733 cubic metres per second.
The flow is expected to reach about 750 cubic metres by Wednesday at the latest. That would be about the same as the levels reached in 1976 when the town experienced serious flooding.
The District of Vanderhoof had deployed 140 thousand sandbags to handle a river flow of 750 cubic metres, those efforts are now being beefed up to handle as much as 800 cubic metres per second.
Unit crews and volunteers are spending their time maintaining and reinforcing nearly three kilometres of dikes around the effected areas of Vanderhoof.
An evacuation alert remains in effect, and residents of more than 130 homes have been advised to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
