...and THIS boys and girls,is exactly what will creat major problems for the container port in Prince Rupert.
One set of tracks is a major faux pas that will come back to haunt them many times over!
One big derailment and there will be serious problems!
One set of tracks can become a pair anytime someone feels they are needed and has the money to invest.

I wonder what the agreement with COSCO looks like with respect to maintaining delivery schedules.
Actually owl, while you are correct to a degree,it isn't quite that simple.
Having traveled to Rupert many times by rail,(nice trip too,I recommend it highly!)there are quite a few areas where double tracking would be a major undertaking.
And this was a source of concern for a number of the larger shipping companys in bringing their ships to Prince Rupert.
This derailment only proves that they were probably right.
And yes,I would assume there is some sort of agreement with companies like Cosco in regards to delivery shedules??

The Container Traffic that will be coming through the Port of Prince Rupert is not necessarily **new** traffic. It is more likely traffic that is presently moving throught the Ports of Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, etc; Maher Terminals, along with Cosco probably feel that by coming through Prince Rupert they can improve their transit time on these Containers, and of course reduce the congestion at the other Ports to some extent.

So the question is. How bad are the Containers presently being delayed at the other Ports due to congestion, transit time, etc; compared to Prince Rupert. If you had a derailment that delayed some Containers for 5/6 days, how would that stack up to delays that are presenltly being experienced at other Ports.

Over a period of one year it probably wouldnt make a huge difference.

When is the government going to stop falling for this "no environmental damage" "no injuries" explanation and start looking at why these trains keep derailing..
I hate to think that we are going to have to have something major happen before they wake up.
I know of no other business that can have this amount of accidents and not be investigated.
I doubt that a trucker going off raod numerous times could get away with saying no harm no foul
Is someone getting paid off?????
Gofaster. Railways are supposedly overseen by the Federal Government and it would be the Feds who would have to take some action.

All Railways have to report all accidents within 24 Hours to the proper Government Authority, who if they deem it necessary would investigate further. This rarely happens if there are no injuries or enviromental damage. Statistically CN Rail is probably no worse than other Railways when it comes to accidents, it just seems that there are more in this area in the last few years, however there could be less in other areas, and so the end result for the year would be about the same as the previous year, and on it goes.
