Hundreds gathered in the sun today at Fort George Park to celebrate Canada Day, our Nation’s 140th birthday. Hosted by the Multicultural Heritage Society, this year’s Canada Day celebration featured entertainment, foods and crafts from a variety of cultures in and around Prince George.
The live entertainment this year, which ran until 6:00pm, included the Prince George Jazz Band, Yalenka Ukrainian Dancers, Bollywood Dream Dancers, and many others. Festivities began shortly before noon with a performance by the PG Community Band, followed by the opening ceremonies and the cutting of Canada’s birthday cake.
Food concessions were serving foods from around the world, including Greek, Chinese, Peruvian, Italian, Indian and First Nation. Local and ethnic crafts were on sale as well, along with homemade fudges and candies.
Local organizations, such as the BC SPCA, the PG Brain Injured Society, and the Service Canada Centre For Youth had displays on site, and educational displays by the Science Alliance were outside the Frasier Fort George Regional Museum.
Kid’s activities included crafts and face painting, and were operated by the Two Rivers Gallery, Girl Guides and the Canadian Northern Children’s Festival.
Dignitaries on-hand were MP Dick Harris, MLA Pat Bell, Mayor Colin Kinsley and Chief Councilor Dominic Frederick of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, and festivities conclude at 7:00pm.
